Has anyone had a problem with their differential leaking? I was playing the "lets find the source of that noise" game and crawled under my truck and noticed that the rear diff was leaking where the drive shaft goes into it. It had fluid on the gas tank, bottom of bed, and one of the shocks. Tried to search for others that have had this problem, but didn't see any.
The truck is a 2000 V6 2wd CC with just over 41,000 miles on it. Currently waiting in the shop for a new seal to arrive tomorrow. =(
Noise was not related to the diff btw.

Yes, I have had to replace a few in my lifetime. It is o.k. if there is a little bit of seepage at this location (and I mean a little) but when it starts slinging drops of gear oil all over the place then it is time to replace the seal.

Yeah, I think that is a common problem. The leaking is probably coming from the plug on the back side. I have a 2000 QC 4x4 and the same thing was happening to me. I have a friend that works at the dodge shop and he replaced free when i had some other stuff done. He told me it is common for the seals to get loose, even though he gave me that one free I think they only cost a couple bucks. But be sure to use some quality diff fluid. The noise should go away as soon as you get it taken care of.

Noise was nothing in the differential. Shock bolt was loose and so was the back bumper.

How much did it cost at the shop?
I have a 2000 3.9L auto RWD and i also crawed underneath my truck and oil was everywhere.
Plus when I accel faster than 40 a weird noise comes from the rear.

I noticed gear oil was being flung onto gas tank. Dealer replaced pinion seal under warranty(Had about 10k at the time). Been fine since.

Careful, there are two suggestions being made for the leak. One is through the fill plug on the back. This should be easy to spot and fix, although I don't think this is the original poster's problem.
The second is the pinion seal. This sounds like the poster's problem. I have replaced a couple of these seals on other trucks, but not on a Dakota. On other's all that's necessary is to remove the driveshaft from the diff, remove the diff yoke nut and yoke, pull the seal with a seal puller, then reassemble.

I have a 99 dakota 3.9 V6 leaking diff fluid but no sounds. took it to midas to have new front seal replaced and they said it needed the rear seal diff pinion kit? does that sound right?

my 2000 4.7 4x4 was leaking fluid from the rear differential. also quiet. since all the bolts were snug i took the bottom bolts out, drained the fluid, took the rest of the bolts off, wire brushed the old gasket off and used 'the right stuff' to replace the gasket. took about an hour, pretty easy. so far so good. i'm inclined to think a rear seal diff pinion kit is the technical term for what i just explained.
