Subject: what do ya think? IP: Logged
Message: well, since my wheels that i really want are on national back order i would like to get something else. Jesse T. has a set of RT wheels but would require expensive tires that i cannot afford right now. Right now i have a set of four dakota sport 5 spoke wheels. I had painted them black but want something different so i got out the ol' sand paper and started sanding until i got to some metal (there are a lot of paint on these things). After that i wet sanded it with 800 grit paper and then steel wool, cleaned it off and rubbed on some aluminum polish and buffed it. It is pretty shiney and looks kinda good. So... what do you guys think? the only downside that i have seen is the amount of sanding it will require. i spent about 20 minutes on just a little piece of the wheel.
should i do it?

Message: I ran into similar clearcoating on motorcycle parts-absolute nightmare getting that crap off. You might look into blasting or chemical removal but then you still have countless hours sanding and polishing. A die grinder or Dremel would help. Can't remember the names, but there are at least a few shops in the Dallas area that do aluminum polishing. If you do polish them there is then the maintenance issue-you'll have to touch them up all the time to remove the oxidation unless you have them the clearcoated again.
I'd get the RT wheels and find an alternate tire of about the same diameter that costs less. Dunlop has tons of charts at their site with all the dimensions you need. Hope this helps.

Message: had the same problem with the grill on my 75 w-100.(it had about 5 different colors on it) aircraft paint remover worked wonders(bought it from a local auto parts store in a spray can) and didn't hurt the aluminum.

Message: thanx for the replies... my brother had used that paint stripper on his old car and it was a HUGE mess. Dont get me wrong the stripper did its job but the clean up wasnt fun. I had also thought about getting them blasted but jesse just offered me a damn good deal on those RT wheels so looks like i will be getting them... might not have tires but what the hey
