Subject: ABS Controller Noise
IP: Logged

Message:
On my 1999 5.2L I've got a noise (very difficult to describe) coming from the ABS controller in my engine compartment (driver front fender). When I turn the key to the "ON" position and just as the fuel pump finishes its cycle (this is with the engine still off), the ABS controller makes a noise almost like belching with your mouth closed..or something like that, which lasts for about a second. It makes the noise just as the fuel pump finishes its cycle and is so consistent with the end of the cycle that I thought it had to do with the fuel pump. It then makes the same noise about a second or two after starting the engine. It happens every time without fail. The brakes work fine with no warning lights or anything (I have not done any power stops to test the ABS however). I can also feel the controller box vibrating when it makes the noise. Any idea as to what's going on here?? Thanks!

I'm a Auto Mechanic in the Air Force
I have some experance with ABS systems

First thing the noise you are hearing is the ABS unit's valves "solenoids" are centering them selves. This is normal operation found even on Chevy Lumina 4 wheel ABS systems. I'm not sure if they are the same systems or not but that has been my experence. My Dakota doesn't have ABS.

As long as you don't have a ABS Light ON, then I wouldn't worry about it.

If you get a chance where there isn't any trafic around on some back road take your Truck up to about 25-30 MPH and do a hard brake to a comeplete stop, you should feel the brake pedal pulse. Right after you come to a complete stop let your foot off the break and slowly let the engine idle or give it a little gas and get back up to 20 MPH while lessoning for the same noise.

It should make the same noise and this is normal.

If your still not happy well all I can say is take it in and get it checked out.

Well it doesn't bother me so much, actually gives me notice that it's OK to start the engine when the fuel pump finishes. Actually I did discover something tonight. If I push the brake pedal and hold it while I turn the key on or start the engine, it wont make the noise until about a second after I release the pedal. The ABS and Brake lights stay on by themselves for a couple seconds after starting and go off.

Yes when you push the brake pedal in on start up it will not make the noise because the ABS computer see's the brake light switch on.

Also after you have been through a ABS situation and you let your foot off the brake pedal just enough for your brake light switch to be on but your still rolling down the road the computer see's the brakes are applied and it will not center it's self "make the noise".

Because when you push the brake pedal you create pressure in the system, and there is one thing you can not do is compress a liquid.

So if it tried to center it's self when you have your foot on the brake. It wouldn't be good for the ABS Unit.
But that is it in a nut shell

Hope I helped
