Hey everyone, I have a 5.2L '99 4x4 and while I was driving home tonight while taking off from a stop light i heard a "pop". So i drove a little ways down the road and figured i should look to see what it was. I open my hood and see oil all over on the passenger side of the engine. Looked like it came from a tube that runs down to the front axle. It was located right next to the radiator cap. Any idea what happened? Should I worry about it? I leave for school in a week and if i need something fixxed it needs to be done soon. Thanks in advance!

Hey Greg,

I have the same year/truck as you, and have experienced the same thing from the front axle.
Were you accelerating hard when it happened?
The tube is acctualy just a breather tube for the front diff, so I dont understand why there would be enough pressure to force gear oil all the way up and out either. I believe there is a TSB for this so check with your dealer. Thier answer to the problem is to install a sort of "catch can" at the end of the hose so if it does it again the fluid wont be all over your engine compartment.
I still don't understand how it could be considered normal, but they attribute it to "spirited driving" whatever that means. How many of you other 4X4 owners have experienced this?

I was accelerating quickly, but not real hard. I noticed that the little white plastic "cap"
was missing on the fitting on the hose. I was able to replace that. I am also wondering if i should be worried about the oil that leaked out of there...should i refil it? If so...how much and how? I am totally confused in how it could come out in the first place...it just doesnt make any sense to me. I have more then the average knowledge when it comes to mechanics but I am confused by how this could happen. Any help is appreciated.
