Subject: Gas light IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 dodge dakota, with the 4.7 liter motor in it. The owners manulat says it has a 22 gallon tank. When the gas light goes on and I refuel, it only takes about 13 - 16 gallons. Leaveing me with plenty of gas. IS there a reason the light goes on with that much gas in it? Or is my owners manual wrong. I thought the light was suppose to go on with a 1/8 of a tank left.

Message: Mine always comes on and takes exactly 17 gallons to fill it at that point. I've run for 40 or so miles with the light on, but don't want to push it. You need fuel in the sump to cool the pump and to have enough to slosh around and not run dry on a hill.

Message: It does that for the same reason they call them idiot lights. It's to keep those people who don't look at their guages from running out of gas. If a chime and light in the dash doesn't draw som attention, then they are just SOL. Kinda of safety feature as well for what Sean said. The fuel pumps on our trucks are inside the tank and cooled by the fuel itself.

Message: Well first thing. If your owners manual says you have a 22 Gal tank more than likely you do with a 4.7L V-8
The 3.9 V-6 trucks have 15 Gal tanks "because I have one"
As far as the light "Depending on the truck"
There could be 2 things wrong.
First because every truck is a little different the sensor for the light can be a little off. Nothing to worry about though just takes a little getting use to.
Second your vent tube, that's the other tube that let's your tank vent is some how malfunctioning, and not letting the air bubble that is formed in your tank when you fill up vent to the atmosphere through the charcoal canister.
Mine comes on like you said about 1/8 of a tank with about 5 Gal left in the tank or so.
I hope I Helped.

Message: I am pretty sure the 3.9s have a 20 gallon tank. I know for a fact mine is bigger than 15 gallons because I have put upwards of 17 gallons in mine and it wasn't completely empty.
My light comes on and it usually takes around 17 gallons to fill up.

Message: It's ok. I have a 24 gallon tank on my truck, and when the fule light comes on, I can drive it 20 miles and still only put 18 gallons of gas in it. Part of it is the way the tank is made. Crawl up under the truck and look at it one day, and you'll figure it out.

Message: From what I could gather on dodge's website the newer trucks only come with 22,24 gallon tanks I could only get it to show the 3.9s so the 2.5s might be different. My truck as a 17 gallon tank and I try not to let my tank get that low. I've, in addition to what's been previously said, heard that there is "dirt" in the bottom of your tank an if you let it get that far it can get sucked up and clog your FIs.

Message: I think you are right about the 22 gallon tank 92dak. I wasn't sure, but now that you mention it I think I remember reading that in the owner's manual of my 2001.

Message: I have a 22 gallon tank and my light comes on when I've used 17 gallons. I'm gambling to see just how far I can go when that light comes on. So far, I've gone 350 on a tank without running out of fuel and I have still have 3 gallons left. With all the mods I've done, I'm getting much better city mileage than before.

Message: Hey! How Does a v8 TB affect mileage on a V6? I'm assuming it would hurt mileage, not help it. Or would it be better to just mod the one on it.

Message: My 98 RC 3.9L V6 started doing that while it was still under warranty. I took it to the dealer and told them about it. They changed the fuel sending unit (read: Drop gas tank, remove and replace pump/filter/level sensing unit) and had it back to me the same day. Since yours is an 02, I'd say take it to the dealer and let then check it out.
Just my 3 cents worth (Inflation Sucks!!!)

Message: 2002 Dak 3.9 V-6 5-spd. The 6ers have a 22 gallon tank, not 15 (at lest the new ones do). My light comes on and the refill takes about 15 gallons leaving a comfortable 7 gallons in the tank. IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO THIS. Nothing wrong so don't bother taking it back to the dealer. With pretty poor gas milage that these trucks get, leaving 7 gallons is leaving about the same RANGE as most 4 cyl cars when their idiot lights come on. i.e. Dak lets say gets avg of 17MPGx7gal=119miles. 4cyl car that gets an avg of 27MPGx4gal=108miles. It's all relative........ ;-)

Message: The V8 TB actually improved mileage. Well, it does if you don't take advantage of the power increase by tromping on the gas so much. =) I never shift when the lame fuel economy shift light comes on and I'm still getting between 2-3 mpg better mileage in the city than before all my mods.
