Subject: Brake Rattle IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 5spd 4x4 Quad Cab. Since new I have had a rattle coming from the front end, drivers. Recently it has gotten much worse, when ever I go over any road bump it rattles. The Shop has said I need to replace my pads and rotors because there are groves in the rotor. I think they are nuts there is only 15,000 miles on the truck. I then had the truck in for oil change / general inspection and asked them to check the retaining clips. The clips were fine and I was told the brakes are also fine.
Any comments or suggestion would be appreciatted.

Message: Are you sure it is the front pads? My dakota has bad upper ball joints. the sounds these make somtimes could be conscrued as a "rattle". (replacing this coming Thursday with GREASABLE bass joints!)
As for the "groves in the rotor" story. This WILL NOT cause pad-rattling and is not a problem with the brakes in any way.
However; if the shims on the contact-points of the pads are insuffecent or non-existing, this may cause rattle. My Raybestos pads CAME WITH a supply of different thickness shims so I could custom-fit with virtually NO play in the pads.
I still have a bag full of the StainlessSteel shims I did not use during the pad-install.
