First off I have 2000 QC 4X4 4.7l totally stock at this point.
My main goal is to increase milage on my truck. I know, I know, trucks don't get good milage, but I want to get all I can.
If I just drop in a K&N what type of improvement will I see?
If I go with a Z-tube or a K&N kit what kind of difference will I see?
Thanks all, I've been going around this issue for some time and want to just get it done. Any opinions or actual data would be very much appreciated!

Ahhhhhhhh, good luck with the mileage. Not really much you can do.
I have a 2000 4.7 4x4 ext. cab wiht a Z-Tube. The Z-Tube increased my MPG by about 2. This is if I can keep my foot off of the accelerator.
The best way to increase your MPG is to drive like grandma would if she had the truck.
I've also heard that the bed-cap also helps by smoothing the air flow over the vehicle.

I've got a 92 CC 3.9 and I figure I'm doing alright with mpg. I have a drop in K&N and cat-back duals(no mufflers) and I'm getting 20-22 mpg with about a 75/25% hwy/city split with a middle weight foot. I also am a firm believer in turning the OD off in town. I think that although the truck's taching a little more it's running leaner and closer to it's optimum rpm. (2000 rpm.0

I just do in town. Not on the highway. I don't like going 20 mph with the truck bearly taching 1000 rpm and my truck will do that. by the way truck has 130K on the odo.

My 99 5.2l 4x4 CC had no noticable increase in MPG with the $240 KN kit so I took it back off and sold it on this site.
It did make a loud sucking sound and gave a tiny bit of crisper throttle response thats about it.

I noticed 1 mpg or so better (according to my overhead consol) by installing a K$N drop-in and switching to synthetic oil. I installed them both at the same time so I don't know what modification helped the most.
I too have a 2000 4.7.

I posted the results of my homemade intake system a week or so ago. My 96 CC with no other mods went from about 13mpg to 19mpg with the cold air intake. However, I've only filled the tank once since the install and then did a long highway drive so that tank was used about 50% highway and 50% suburbia driving. I'm on the second tank now and can tell you that with the driving I've already done I would normally have a little more than 3/4 tank left. Instead, the dial hasn't dropped below the full mark yet.
It seems to me the results will vary from truck to truck, year to year, and depending on what other mods you have. I'm installing a Dynomax SuperTurbo muffler this week so my numbers should increase even more, according to much of what I've read on this site. I'll post periodic results after that.
