Subject: Painting Mud Flaps IP: Logged
Message: I just put on a set of 4 Mopar Mud flaps on my Dakota. They look great, but I think they would look better if they were painted to match my truck (black). They are a flat black now, but I want to paint them with a high gloss paint to match. The mud flaps are made of plastic and say they can be painted. It says to sand with 320 grit paper then prime and paint with a "flexible paint". Will Duplicolor work for this? I found a "universal black" at wal-mart in duplicolor, I assume that will work. Should I put on a Clear Coat and if so, where can I get that? Any tips on painting these so they don't crack and peel after 2 weeks? Any help is appreciated!

Message: whats up man, how ya doin?? well, i have mud flaps on my truck too, and i thought about just painting the RAM head on them, but i decided that it wouldn't show up real good, but, now that u mention it, i might paint mine white to match my truck, for now i just shine em up with the tire shine on the rag left from my tires, ne way... I think if u do this ull need some "ADHESION PROMOTER", make paint stick better, but first ull need to sand them with very fine grit paper, then, use the color paint u want, black, coat them about 2-3 times id say, or up to 4. then bout 2 coats of clear, i believ u can get that at "THE ZONE" (auto zone), or advanced auto, dam, good idea, lol, imma do that, another addition on my "Truck Mods TO Do List!", ne way, ttyl man
**ALSO, does ne one know a better way to mount these flaps so the screws dont work themselves loose, mine become loose aftera whiloe, i have to tight them back up, they're mount to fiberglass, but ne tips??**

Message: My thaught, is quick take them off!! I have them on my truck and would not put them on again. 1st I have seen trucks that dont have them that have less chips. What I have found is the front of the rear fender flair is all sand blasted from the rocks that get kicked up from under the front flaps. Maybe it would happen anyways but it still sucks. 2nd dirt and little peebles get behind them and then chews up the flairs behind the flaps. Anyways thats just my thaught. If yah like them thats great but I dont think they really help. Good looking truck.
Take Care

Message: Hope that doesn't happen to my truck as I don't do much driving off road, but I guess everyday driving could kick up stones and stuff. I will keep an eye on it. I like the way they look, but will take them off if they start ruining the flares.
Thanks for the tip Graphite!!!! not a bad idea.

Message: yea, he is right, the flare behind the flap is chewed up, when i first got my 97, i took them off, and where the flap was mounted to the flare, the paint was gone, all scuffed and eveything, i didnt like that, so i put them back on, I dont particulary like the flaps, as it makes the truck, to me, seem lower to the ground, im hopin in the next yr. or so i can throw 3" under mine with 33"s, so, for now i have them on, i might end up not paintin them, but o well, ne tips on the mountin problem to make them more snug fit? and how hard is it to touch up fiber paint ur-self? ne tips on that??

Message: Mine is a 2002 and in one Winter they were pretty chewed up. I've considered getting them and that strip of body panel that's under the doors and panels Line-Xed when I go to do my bed.

Message: You might have noticed that BMW bottom rockers and toyota rovkers have peeble like texture. They use a product called Rocker Shultz. It is preety darn close to indestructable. To add to this you put flux in the paint that you spray in this area. The flux makes the paint flexable. This is what they add to paint to paint front fascias so the paint flex's on impact instead of craking and flakeing off. Hell I wish they would paint my entire vechile this way. Seriously though I have often thought that the lower 4 inchs and bed rail should come this way from the factory.

Message: Just imagine what your fender flares and rocker panels would look like if you didn't have flaps!
I can see how the flap might rub on the flares as they are touching but without them there is no protection from the S*it flying of your wheels.

Message: I will keep a close eye on wear and tear on the flares. Got a message in another forum that a special flex additive must be added to any paint I use so the stuff won't peel and chip. Not sure what I will do yet.
