Subject: Dakota PS, Broken shaft and stalling...

I'm actually posting this for my father...

He has a 2001 V6 Dakota with 6000 miles with a funky steering problem.

The first time he was parallel parking and had the steering turned full left to lock when it made a grinding noise and stalled the truck. That time it actually broke the shaft on the power steering pump. He had it towed to the dealer and they replaced it.

The second time I was with him... Same deal, wheel turned left to lock and I was outside the truck. It made a sound similar to grinding gears. He lost steering and brakes and the truck stalled. This time the shaft didn't break but was quite a bit more dangerous as he was backing away from a rec area with a 200 foot cliff.

The dealer has no idea, I have no idea. Anyone else experience something similar?

Thanks for any insight you might have...

Rick

Can you reproduce the parallel parking at the dealer and make it do the same thing..?

It almost sounds like the real problem may be the power-steering rack. If it is binding up somehow, it would put undue stress on the rest of the steering system.

I'm just not sure how that would have broken the shaft off of the power-steering pump. Maybe it was defective all ready, or maybe it had taken a beating because of a bad p/s rack, and the parallel parking was the straw that broke the camel's back...so to speak.

I whole-heartedly agree with Handi. Get it to a dealer & practice some parallel parking or hard left turns.
