Subject: Rear-end vibration IP: Logged
Message: Last night it was raining and I gavemy 93 4x4 Dakota w/318 a little gas while taking a corner. As I rounded the corner, about the time I usually hear a chirp or two from the rear tires, I felt some heavy shaking and vibrating. I have felt this in the past on dry pavement when I try and do a burn out. What could it be and is this normal with a LSD?

Message: Well, I can offer a suggestion and it may not apply to your situation. I know that I would want to know about all possible problems. Try taking it on the highway and lightly accelerate at highway speeds. See if it vibrates. Then let off the gas a little bit to see if it vibrates. If it does this, its probably the U-joints. Just one possibility. Good luck.

Message: I have a similar problem with my 91. Ive changed or repaired everything except the rear gears. Has anyone replaced the rear end to solve their vibration issues?

Message: I had this happen to me in my old 89 Dak.Saw that the pinion seal was leakin and put it off about 10 min too long. Bought the seal and rear diff fluid at Advanced Auto. On the last turn into my alley into my yard,I blew my spider gears,Diff was bone dry!! That was an expensive lesson. It was more of a "CLUNK" than a viberation. Very sickening feeling.Going strait there was no prob, but try to turn and"CLUNK!!!" Shook the hole darn truck!

Message: I dunno what the problem is>>>
As i turn a corner and hit the throttle on my 01 Dakota 4.7 sport Quad I get a clunk and a definitive shake when it gears down from 3 - 2. Almost like the rear end is skipping or jumping. I t also shakes at 90 - 100 km/hr on highway. No one wants go give a firm answer to me. I ve had tires balanced but not solved for the shake. The transmission place tells me its the tranny. HELP

Message: Hey i have had some rear end trouble with my dakota. The first prob was that i welded up my side gears one night in a desperate attempt to get more traction. About a week later i blew the whole thing apart when i went out drifting. That ended up with me puttin in a whole other rear end. Ever since i did that swap, i noticed some wierd vibrations at about 70mph and when i accelerated hard, i had to turn the steering wheel to the right to keep it in a straight line. I finally figured out what was the prob this week. The axle tube comming from the housing on the left side had started to rotate inside the housing and i noticed that the whole axle was starting to bow down in the middle. This is what was causing the change in allignment on fast acceleration. Check for oil leaking around the left side of your certer casting and if there is oil residue, its probably loose like mine. I am in the process of welding mine to strengthen it, but the first attempt failed after i went drifting again( i just put in a powertrax locker btw, makes the world of difference )

That's not the thing to do to a vehicle you drive on the street. Great for track, wonderful for off-road, bad for pavement.

Message: If the tires are balanced and the truck still vibrates at highway speeds when the drivetrain is under load but does not vibrate when you let off the gas then you're experiencing the same problem I had.
I replaced a single rear u-joint (under warranty) and the problem went away.
It could also be a bent driveshaft or, God forbid , the tranny.
