I have a 2000 dakota 4.7L and started getting the "ping" about 6 months after I purchased it. It has been back to the dealer a number of times and they always wanted to "tune it up". The plugs have been changed annually which help but did not elimate the ping. I was getting the ping between 2500 and 3000 RPMs. I finally decided the try the Autolite 3923s and to my surprise they have totallly elimated the pings as well the truck overall performance seems better. My suggestion is before you do anything change the plugs with the 3923s!

then you must have gotten the 'death flash' for the PCM, which basically retards the timing, reduces predetonation, and decreases HP.
