Saw an earlier post about best car wax to use. Went back to consumer report (May 2000) and found Zymol Cleaner Wax and Nu Finish Car Polish were the best in their testing. Some brands I expected to do well, simply did not. Since I already use Nu Finish - I'll stay with what I have. Anyways - some food for thought.

I hate to say it, but I totally disagree. I work at an auto parts store, and we carry both of the products you mentioned. Needless to say, I've tried almost every wax, cleaner, polish, and gel on the market. I am sort of brand favored to 3M, but Meguires is also really good. Zymol is overpriced, and Nu-finish flat out lies about how long it lasts. Whenever I wax my Dak, I always go with a clay bar, then Meguires polish, and then pure carnuba wax. I have the benefit of a buffer, but I found even applying them by hand looks great. But I guess everyone has their humble and honest opinion. Thats just mine.

No problem with anyone disagreeing - but until you take time to READ Consumer Report's evaluation, I think you're opinion is, at best, subjective. Meguires rated pretty poorly overall. And after reading how they tested; I would say they were pretty objective in their ratings.

For what it is worth, we polish our 6 million dollar helicopter with NuFinish.

Barry,

I tried Zaino Brothers polish & wax last summer and my Dak did shine.

However, I didn't think the results were worth the extra cost and I switched over to Meguiar's. I can honestly say that the shine is as deep as with the Zaino. Plus Meguiar's swirl management worked better. Here's Meguiar's link:http://www.meguiars.com/

I have tried almost all the waxs on the market that can be bought at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, and Auto part stores. I have had results with Zymol. I used NuFinish since the late 80's and I realy like it on all of my other vechiles but my Dak just does not like it at all. It leaves streaks and I have to apply more then one coat to get rid of streaks. With the Zymol it seldom take more then one coat to get that high gloss streak free finish. I wax my truck once ever two weeks so I realy do not need the ultimate protection that Nu Finish's synthetic polymeres are capable of. I am just after the best shine I can get in the least amount of time possable.

I have waxed my truck with tuttle wax emerald series. I have found that after running my truck through high power car washes that I get a white residue on my paint and also on the black plastic door handles. It wipes off the paint but not of the place plastic. Do anybody know how to get this white residue off the plasic?

Hey dakota man, mothers makes some stuff called "back to black". its not just for black trim, but any plastics. it works really good for getting the trim really shiny and for getting the old wax residue off. easy to apply, just wipe it on and then wipe it off. try some of that and let me know how it works out for you.

here you go dakota man. this is a TSB on your problem..........

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Difficult to clean light colored "chalky" residue from exterior plastic body components that are molded in black, especially those that are textured, such as door handles, mirrors, roof rack attachments, etc. Frequently, this "chalky" residue is actually an accumulation of car wax, road grime, etc. trapped in the plastic grain.

DIAGNOSIS:

If the exterior surface of textured plastic body components that are molded in black appears to be "chalky" in color due to an excessive accumulation of car wax, road grime, etc. trapped in the plastic grain, perform the following Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin provides instructions for proper cleaning of textured plastic body components that are molded in black that appear to be "chalky" in color.

NOTE: TO HELP KEEP THE SURFACE BEING CLEANED FROM DRYING TOO RAPIDLY, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING REPAIR PROCEDURE AWAY FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT.

1. Wet the surface of the component in the area to be cleaned and a toothbrush or other similar soft, short bristle brush with water.

2. Using the brush and a mild detergent such as liquid dish soap, gently rub the surface to develop a good lather and remove the contaminant.

3. Rinse the assembly with clean water and towel dry.

4. If the residue is not completely removed, repeat steps 1 through 3 until the surface is clean

Meguiars makes a product called "Extra". It is an all purpose cleaner/degreaser. It works wonders at removing wax and dirt off all the plastic. Look in any store that carries Meguiars products. It is a purple bottle and a quart costs about $3 or so. I use it to clean wheels and tires not to mention as a degreaser for laundry, hands, etc. Try it and you won't use anything else...this stuff really works....now I am beginning to sound like a Meguiars sales rep...hehe

Craig

In my opinion Zaino is the best wax/treatment available. It costs a little more but it gets better every time you use it. Nothing sticks to it.

Impressive test. I have been using Zaino for a couple years now. My 6 week old DQC has 3 coats on it. Shine is getting deeper and wetter....

I have showed cars and tried many products over the years, for me Zaino is far and away the best I've used. Actually the shine with the 1st coat isn't any better than it's competitors. In fact Meguiars beats it. But Zaino does something nothing else does, it layers. I have 30 coats on my Navy Blue Camaro SS and the shine has gotten wetter and deeper with the coats. It just keeps getting better!

Zaino last longer than about anything I've tried. I put one coat on my old Chevy Van to see how it would last, it took almost 8 months before the beading stopped. And this vehicle sits out in the South Texas sun every day.

And with an SPF of 40, your vehicle will never fade!

Well enough raveing over Zaino, obviously I am an addict....Think I need to go put another coat on right now. he he

Just a question..why do all you guys waste money on product that doesn't last? Why not spend a little more and get it done right, if your waxing or polishing once or twice a month the product is no good. Take it to your closest automotive detailing company and get it done by those of us that have the product to do it right.(It will save us from having to fix your mistakes later.)

Well Sassy Sexy

I just threw some NU FINISH on the buffer yesterday, and went around the Dak...That is the 2'nd time this year I have done so....

After washes in between, I use Quick Detailer, mine beads like a mofo.

To the guy talking about Nu-finish not lasting as long as stated....Common now? How long do you want it to last? For the $$$ it's good stuff, goes on good wipes off easily...Nice shine excellent bead...Different strokes for different folks I guess. I like Meguires, 3M, and clay bars...but I always come back to throwing nu-finish on the buffer....Guess I'm just used to it. Been using the stuff for 10 years or better.

Well guys I have worked in both sales, service and body shop for Dodge, Chevy, and Ford and our body shop used a commercial brand called AutoMagic for buffing, glazing, claying and compounding. But for maintaining and restoring OEM paint and custom jobs, Mothers Carnuba paste beat the rest hands down. I wax maybe once a month in summer but have gone 3 months, and my factory paint shined till last November when I had custom job sprayed. I never use soap when washing my truck just a bucket of water and soft sponge no matter how dirty, then sham. The first application will be your hardest to apply but the time you save washing with water for the next 8 years is worth it. Its not the cheapest paste but its worth every dime. Haven't tried Zaino but don't have a reason and trust me after 9 hours masking flames I will only go with the best that works for me.At least all you are washing your Daks. HeeHee!

A few years ago an auto magazine (can't remember which one) took a large hood to a car and divided it into about twenty 1ftx1ft squares. The hood was oriented towards the sun and left outside. After 6 months of observations Collinite Fleetwax was the winner. It can be bought at marinas for about $14-$15 per can. Pure carnauba wax which takes some effort, but the results are great and it lasts. I use it on all our vehicles including my BMW motorcycle and my wife's Lexus LX470.
