A freind of mine had the oil pump die on his 86 Olds today and I dont know if he just didnt notice or what, but he just kept driving and the end result wasnt good. Now, I am nervous when driving on the freeway or in busy traffic that my oil pump will go out. Hsa anyone ever had their pump take a dump on them in their Dakota? How long should I expect the stock pump in my 93 4x4 Dakota w/318 last?

It verys with the design and upkeep on the vechile. If I have a vechile that is in great shape with good oil pressure I leave them alone. If one starts to lose pressure I replace it. If your vechile has one that is mounted in the timming cover you should check it when you replace your timeing belts or chains. Most vechiles use belts and they should be changed at 60,000 miles and if your engine uses a chain then they are normaly replaced at 100,000. If you have to remove the timming cover for maintence it is too easy to replace or at least check your oil pump at this time. I have seen some oil pumps on trucks and cars last 300,000 miles and some less than 36,000 miles. If you exclude raceing I have never heard of an oil pump just failing without warning.
