Message: Is it safe to use an oil additive that contains zinc, phosphorous, chlorinated and sulfur compounds? Some say they are non-corrosive if they have a high TBN reserve to neutralize acids. Is that so?

Message: NO!!! If you want better oil buy better oil!!!! If you do not want synthetic check out Lucas's motor oil it has a TBN of 11 or 12 and is not synthetic. You might also check out Cempeco oil it has a very robust addative package. If you want the best try good synthetic like Amsoil, NEO or Redline! Out of the three Amsoil has the best additive package and the highest TBN. Redline has the best base stock and NEO is somewhere in between the two. I have used redline products in the past and have always been happy with them. I have also used Mobil 1 with good results. I am currently switching over to Amsoil. I am in the process of slowly testing produts as I drain them from vechile's so by next year I should have enough info to report back. When I drain the mobile 1 out of my 2001 Dak and replace it with Amsoil I will test it and report back. Then when I test the Amsoil I will try to post booth tests. I wish all of us would do this. It would give us all a very good data base if each of use tested the oil we are currently useing. We would have to take the year, engine style and miles into account but it would be interesting to see what we see!

Message: Dont worry about it dude,I used a chlorinated additive in a jeep cherokee for six years,it was torn down at the 125,000 mile mark and there was no sign of abnormal corrosion in the bearings.Just keep the oil changed at 3000 miles and you wont have a problem.

Message: I agree sandman,it would be interesting to see.Speaking of TBNs,I think the product I`m using is a 17 TBN,is that sufficient along with substantial amounts of corrosion inhibitors to protect the engine?

Message: The problem is how did they get the high TBN???? IF they used alot of EP additives to do this it will fail. What happens is that the EP additives get used up and oxidize before you know it you have TAN instead of a TBN. A good example would be from useing alot of calcium. As the viscosity increases the shear protection goes down because the oxicized calcium is not contributeing to lubpricity it is just takeing up space. The best I can say is test it. You will never catch me putting anything clorinated into my engine or a custmers engine!!!!!!!I over simplified everything put you get the idea. Why not just buy a better oil. You must care about your vechile if you are asking about extending the performance of the oil. My only question is why are you so dead set on teying to "Improve " bad oil when you can buy a great oil. You would not put Syrup on a piece of $HIT and expect it to taste like a pancake would you? Likewise you can not try to add some magic additive to your oil and get great results. In some cases you might get a better product then you started with but in most cases I am sure you will get a lighter wallet and a comprimised product at best. If you are serious and want to know just test the oil after you have had your "MYSTERY MIX" in the engine for 7000 miles. You would think that if it is a decent mix it ought to be able to go at least 7500 miles seeing how that is what most manufactures recommend with stock dino oil! I know Lucas claims that you can double your oil change interval with their product so if your normaly interval is 7500 with dino oil then dino oil with lucas should be fine after 15,000 miles of driveing!!! Testing only cost $12-$20 dollars to get done. If you use Amsoil you can get a discount rate from one company of $9.95.

Message: Thanks for setting me straight Sandman,I think you are right, instead of trying to boost an inferior dino oil I should just use a good synthetic.I guess I was worried about leakage with the synthetic because of 50,000 plus miles on dino.I am leaning toward Redline, but I was also considering mobil 1 although some guys say its inferior.Even if it is though, its got to be better than dino spiked with an additive.
