Subject: Premium 6 speaker stereo sounds dull? IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone replaced their stock stereo system with an aftermarket amp and new speakers? I was told by two different salesmen (@Circuit City/Best Buy) that even the premium Dakota 6-speaker sound system was cheap primarily due to the factory speakers being of paper construction.
They do sound dull to me even with the graphic equalizer and directional fader speaker control.
I put an amp and better speakers in my last truck before my Dakota and the sound was allot clearer.
1. Again, has anyone up-graded their stock system?
2. If so, how'd it sound?
3. What brand amp/speakers do you recommend? (What sounds best in a Dakota?)
4. Where is the best place to install the amp?
5. Where is the best place to get new up-grades?
I live in Northern California in a college town call Chico. Our city has many of the usual chain electronics stores.
6. Are the chain electronic stores the best price- wise or are the smaller "mom and pop" stereo stores better?
I don't know if the stock in-dash CD/Cassette is just weak or all it needs is an amp and better speakers.
I'll probably go with about 650 amps for all six speakers. Price is always an issue but for a better sounding system I'll pay a little more.
Sorry for all the questions, I just want get a great sounding system without running around to all the electronics outlets in town and talking to, "biased for their house product" salesmen.
Thanks and Mopar2ya

Message: I hear you on the quality of the sound system. That was the very first thing I noticed on my drive home the day I bought it. Lame. I would start with the speakers, then see how you like it before changing out other components. I am not sure how good the actual decks are but if you are happy with the sound after the speakers are upgraded, then you can save yourself some green (since you said money IS an issue) for now. You can always upgrade later on but at least the speakers could be a cost effective fix for the time being. I've always bought systems from specialized car audio stores here in NY. You can always dicker with them. Not sure you can do this with a chain store. Plus, most chain stores don't usually carry Alpine or Blaupunkt. Good luck.

Message: I agree with the previous poster. Start with replacement speakers. Go with a good brand like Polk Audio and just replace the spearkers. THe amp in the system should be fine. I am guessing that it is propable around 158 watts peak for them to get 110 watts RMS. I did not do the math just an estimate. RMS is PEAK watts at 1000 cycles a second times .707. It realy does not take that much power for mids and highs. You are not going to get killer bass w/o a subwoofer. I used blow alot of people away when I would demonstrate how much sound you got with just one watt of power. If you do get an amp get a high current amp and use it to run one or two sub's. A 300 watt single channel mono-amp would work fine to drive 2 12" subs. If you need space more then bass then consider two 10" woofers. I think you would be suprised how nice you system could sound like this. If you are a bass head then you should just gut the entire system and start from scratch.

Message: I have a set of Infinity Kappa Series speakers
I ordered from Crutchfield I haven't installed them yet, but I have purchased Infinity speakers
for every vehicle I have owned. You won't be disappointed, trust me. I will post the pics of the install when complete. The separtate tweeter is going to be mounted on the pillar right above the dash. Plus whe you order from crutchfield you get the speaker adapter kit, this helps to seal the speaker to the factory
enclosure so you get tighter bass response.
