Subject: K&N FIPK KIT OFFICAL DYNO #S FROM K&N IP: Logged
Message: I have read many of debate on this subject as to what type of increases to expect but have yet to see any hard numbers or other info. I spoke to the nice people over at k&n and they more then happy to send me a dyno sheet and stats for part #57-1516 application is for the 4.7l dakota. heres the specs as they appear
5.7hp@ 3800 rpm
5.6hp@ 4100 rpm
7.0hp@ 4400 rpm
7.3hp@ 4700 rpm
5.8hp@ 5000 rpm
AS YOU CAN SEE MOST OF THE INCREASE IN POWER COMES AT THE UPPER END OF THE POWERBAND. DO U ALL THINK COST OF ONE OF THESE FIPK IS WORTH IT? TYPICAL PRICES I HAVE FOUND RANGE BETWEEN $250 AND $290 FOR THIS KIT... IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THIS KIT INSTALLED WHAT IS YOUR OPION?

Message: At $250 for 7.3 hp thats about $34.25 a horse.
Hmm, if you spend $409 for headers and get 12 hp this = 34.08 a horse.
Now 3" catback system at $289 at 10 hp =$28.90 a horse.
H.O. CAMS for $200 at 15 hp = $13 a horse.
Super Charger System at 40% gains for $3850 for 94 hp = $40.96 a horse.
Computer Reprogram at $350 at 14 hp = $25 a horse.
Twin Turbo System at 50% gains for $6500 at 118 hp = $55.08 a horse.
I would say it's right in there as worth it. On a second note, the best bang for the buck is the H.O. CAMS and the Computer Reprogram.
For the cheapest combo above for the max hp available will cost an average of $30 a horse.
This is something that has been fairly consistant for 25 years. WOW, mechanics haven't gotten a raise in a long time.

Message: I think Yates is even being generous with his guestimates .. on the 4.7L anyhow, I'd say the cat-back is worth 3-4hp
headers maybe 6-7hp
and I've heard of higher gains with the HO cams (20hp or so) ... so, like he said EASILY the best bang for the buck.
MikeS, the HO cams are factory cams for the HO Jeep Grand Cherokee (2002 I think?)... just go to the dealer, or if you want instructions and the install tool too, go to KRC performance.
Hughes Engines started selling them too for $175 .. if you send them your cores.
here's the P/N's MikeS:
HO CAMS:
Left side = 53021411AB
Right side = 53021412AB
For more info on them (installation etc.) search the archives here.

Message: I got a price of $106 each Canadian at the local dealer. So that's $212 plus 15% sales tax. So we're talking $243.80 at my door in Canadian funds. It's not worth it for me to get them from KRC because of the exchange and retarded duty costs. That's still not a bad price for the amount of performance they gain a person. Maybe next month I will get them and install them. I'd still need instructions and the tool. Phuq.

Got the lead form someone off this site.
That's right, $120, sprayed with oil, and shipped to my door. (sprayed with oil to cut down on the surface rust many have had)
Don't you hate in when someone gets a better deal than you?

Message: No, they are not pinned. The shafts are made of steel tubing and the lobes are powder metal forged directly onto the shaft.

Message: The K&N filter looks too far back and seems it would suck hot air. For those who want to remove the rubber front flap and have a reasonably priced functional intake, check out our website. Not name brand but it works well. Have sold many with no cracking or melting reported. For the 4.7L. Please don't flame me. This intake is an alternative for those of us who have to buy our kids school cloths and not put excess $$$ into our trucks.

Message: No offense Tad_w - but as I've stated on many occasions now, all that's required with the K&N to get it to pull cool air is to remove the flap. The heat shield even makes a really good splash guard.

Message: Or you coudl spend under $150 and get the airraid intake which is basically the same as the K&N kit. I have yet to see the K&N in person, but from the pics I've seen, it seems the AirRaid is actually a better design if you replace the stock airhat with a homemade tube. And I've also heard from Bruce Bridges who makes the F&B TB's that the stock airhat has very little restrictions. My friend was able to pick up a AIrRaid fr $80 and spent about $15 more in parts and has pretty much a K&N CAI kit. What's more is the AirRaid doesn't have the bottom shield on it so if you remove the flap next to radiator it works better than the K&N because it can suck in the cool air getting blown into the airbox. Doesn't matter what you do for intakes, homebrew or pre-built, it seems the K&N kit is the most epensive and doesn't offer anything over sme of the other kits besides the name to warrant the higher price.

Message: I just purchased the Airaid kit, but am unimpressed. I noticed no power gain (would you REALLY notice 5-10HP gain in reality?) and the kit seems a bit cheesy. It only uses 2 of the 4 clips that attach it to the stock airbox. I'm gonna return it and for a few $$ more get the K&N FIPK. I found some prices on it at http://www.knfilters.com/FIPK/FIPKOnline.htm
