Message: Do any of you have the problem of the door handles chalking up? Its almost like they are fading. Its not wax , they are just turning a grayish white. Do any Daks or Durangos have body color matched handles? I have seen one around here where the guy sanded and painted them green , to match the body , but after about a year and a half , they started peeling. Is that my only option?

Message: I have a black 2002 club cab, which I've owned for about 5 months and my handles are starting to do what you mention. I have no idea why, and it looks like crap. The only thing I've done to temporarly fix the problem is armor all them.

Message: I've got the same problem with mine and, of course, EVERYBODY notices it. Tried Armor All, lasted until the next wash. Mine is an 11/01 build, bought it first of May. I've gotta take in it for the dealer for the better-not-be ball joint problem so I'm going to gripe about it then.
We have a MY00 CC on our fleet as well as a MY98 BR and a MY02 DR. They sit outside in the elements pretty much 24/7 and all three's handles are as black as can be. DCX must have changed the material as one of their "ingenious" cost reduction ideas. I'll let ya'll know if I get anywhere with them.

Message: Do not use Armor All. It will make your trim, vinyl, rubber ect. worse in the long run. I use black again on my classic cars for bad spots and Vinylex on all the trim and dash.

Message: I may be onto something regarding the chalking problem with Dakota door handles. Since nothing I applied did any good, I decided to try a different approach. The discoloration appears to be IN the texture so I used a power toothbrush (light pressure), Zaino car wash detergent (straight) and I worked the detergent into the handle thoroughly. More detergent and very little water worked best for me. Rinse, dry and it’s naturally black handles again.
Suggestions: Use light pressure on the brush. You want the bristle tips to scrub INTO the texture. Be careful when you get close to the edge near the paint. The detergent gets all over the place so you'll probably need to wash you truck when finished.
Jim
P.S. Has anyone noticed the mirror housings starting to chalk?
Are there any Zaino users who have the chalking problem?

Message: Thanks Jim , I'll give it a try. I have it detailed after the winter by the pros , they do the inside , engine ,and buff and polish the outside. I figured they can mess getting the winter stuff off (they do the underside too) and I can keep it lookin good through the Spring - fall. Takes ME 8 to 9 hours to do it the way I like it!! Funny thing is I have used the toothbrush , but with just reg carwash and water. I'll try full strength and see what happens.

Message: Ken,
Just want to make sure you understand that when I said toothbrush I mean a power toothbrush.
My favorite is the Braun 3D Excel. Why?? Because that's what I brush my teeth with. I don't use the same brush head for teeth and truck though.
One other small item. . . the bristles on the brush head have a row that is higher than the rest. I trimmed the high ones so they are all the same height.
Good luck.

Message: I "chalk" this problem up to minerials in the water you use to wash your trucks. Had a real problem with my windshield being spotted when I bought the truck. Used CLR and some real fine steel wool to remove the spots. I'm afraid to use CLR on my door handles, not sure if it would effect the paint or the plastic.

Message: I have taken a totally different approach to my door handles. I believe that the handles are drying out and are in need of additional oil. These things are made of plastic which is a petroleum product. I apply a liberal amount of general use oil (comes in a small white can with a red cap on the pointed tip). This seems to work pretty well for me and lasts for a considerable amount of time.

Message: I have no idea about the water where I live. I don’t have a water spot problem so I don’t know if it's the water or not. This problem is new to me but I’m not sure I’ve ever had a vehicle that has this type of plastic handle. There's a post or two from owners of multiple Dakotas and some of their trucks "chalk" and some don't. Go figure.
I do know that the electric toothbrush worked very well. I don't know if it removed mineral deposits or dried out plastic or whatever but it worked. I could always tell that the “chalk” would return when I applied any number of products that are available for treating plastic. I also tried any number of products that are not for plastic but seemed like a good idea. Nothing worked.
I think the current condition of the handles (“stripped”) requires some sort of a preservative but I’m not sure what would be best. I sent an e-mail to Larry @ Car Care Specialties hoping for a suggestion but have heard nothing.
Any ideas?
Jim

Where did you get your door handles powder coated?
Did you remove the hardware yourself and how difficult was it?

Message: What you are seeing is actually oxidation on the plastic. It does it on all plastics, but shows much more on black. I have tried all the products from back to black to armoral and I have found a product called black chrome works the best. Oxidation will always come back, but Black Chrome has worked the longest for me in the past.
