Message: Ok, I am trying to figure out all my options on filtering and oils to use with my new 2000 4.7l 4x4.
1. Are the AMSOIL extended drain oils really good for a year?? Even if they are, would you really use them that long?
2. Has anyone used one of the AMSOIL by-pass filters? Are they worth the trouble and had anyone installed one on a 2000 QC 4.7 4X4? If so, which one did you use?
3. There seems to be some debate on AMSOIL foam filters vs. K&N cotton. I understand that the K&N has higher flow rates, but does the AMSOIL provide enough more filtration to consider using it? I am considering building a homebrew if I can find some aluminum pipe to use rather than plastic pipe.
4. When putting in my homebrew, is it necessary to remove the entire factory air intake? I am considering leaving the square plastic box (airhat?) in place. What effect would this have on my primary goal of increased MPG??
THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL IDEAS / SUGGESTIONS!!

Message: Brad,
YOu can do your homebrew any way you like. I think the AIRraid intake leaves the stock air hat in place. I took mine off with my homebrew.
remember, if you have sewer pipe on your intake,....you might be a redneck!
The AMSoil sponsor whould be posting soon, I think his name is Scott.

Amsoil Bypass Filtration
The AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filter enhances oil and engine life by keeping oil analytically clean. Even the water and ultra fine particles that escape conventional oil filters are no match for the AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filter. The By-Pass oil filter will filter oil to 1/10 of a micron.
AMSOIL foam filters vs. K&N cotton
Some people on this website, I won't mention their name (Cosmo), have claimed that Amsoil discredits K&N and has begun to post things such as Ams_cks, etc. For this reason I will "pass" on commenting for now. Hopefully Sandman will post here as he is well versed in the differences. Maybe I will follow up later and if you have direct questions let me know.

Message: Steven,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I have read many of the comments about AMSOIL bashing other products....
On the bypass filter, which model is recommended for the 2000 4.7 Dak? Also, where is the filter mounted for my truck?
I'll await others comments on the foam vs K&N filters.

Message: If you are like me and you drive a truck until the wheels fall off then I would install the AMSOIL Ultra Fine Oil Filtration System (By-Pass Filter) I use the BMK-11 KIT and the BE-90 Filter Element on my service trucks and Commercial Lawn Equipment.
If you trade trucks often(every couple of years) then I would not install one unless you think that it would help increase the resale value of your truck. The by-pass filter requires about a 6"x6"x10" Space (give or take a little).
I will use a foam filter any day v/s a cotton gauze and wire screen design. I have seen the cotton gauze work its way out of the screen over time and then you have a small hole that will allow a very large grain of sand to pass through.
The foam filter will not last as long as a cotton gauze type filter but do a better job at what a filter is designed to do, and that is to keep abrasive, horsepower robbing grit out of your engine.

Message: Yeah, I do like to drive my truck til the wheels fall off! I liked what I had read about the bypass filters but am unsure about where to mount it on my truck. The Amsoil website didn't have a lot of detail on installing the setup.
Thanks!

Message: Each and every vehicle is different so there is no way to give an exact mounting location.
I saw a Volkswagon beetle with one of these filters mounted inside the car with a speaker box covering up the mount, filter and hoses.

Message: KC,
With many newer vehicles, the amount of space under the hood is getting smaller and smaller. Generally, the most popular areas to mount the bypass unit are under the vehicle, between the grill and radiator, and the lowermost part of the firewall. You may want to inspect those areas to determine if there is an adequate location. I wish I could offer you more advice. Since I don't have your model truck in my garage, and don't have a customer that has installed one in a 2000 4.7l 4x4, I'm limited in my knowledge.
Dr.D.,
Thanks for helping KC. I was traveling and always appreciate all the help I can get since I receive approximately 50 Amsoil emails each and every day, not including all the forums I visit to try and offer advice.
Thanks Again,
