 Subject: Slaughtered a Ford Thunderbolt

Friend of mine bought a 2003 Ford Ranger with the Thunderbolt package on it made by SLP. I was suprised to see the sticker price at nearly 24k after a A-Plan reduction while mine was only 17k after my chrysler discount. I'm running a 4.7 ext, 4x2 with split rear gibson stainless exhaust. No other mods. The thunderbolt package is basically a cosmetic one, but includes a exhaust and a Airaid intake. It also includes a Lund Stick on Air dam on the hood. Needless to say we lined up 3 times at 3 different lights, and I destroyed it by at least 5 to 8 car lengths. He's running the 4.0 ltre with the 4.10 rear end. I have 3.55 and the 4.7. WAY TO GO DODGE!

222HP for a V6 truck isn't really that far off from the 4.7 Dakota's HP of what is it like 235 or something like that? But the Dakota's 2 extra cylinders is probably whats helping it get up there faster.

I thought the 4.0L was a straight 6 in the Ford?
I wonder what kind of torque it makes? The HP isn't going to help it as much as torque will off the line.
Man... what -is- it with Ford and 'Non-functional' hoodscopes? Ever looked at them? They look like crap! Cheap formed plastic inserts! How hard would it be to make it functional? Probally save them some money, wouldn't have to put metal under that part of the hood, or paint it...

One of the biggest mysteries still goes unsolved. Why put non-function scoops on any vehicle. It just screams "wanna-be." On the other hand, it does give me more ammunition to pick on Fords. =)

He probably got the same corporate discount as I did, because the company that I work for is a corporate partner with DC we can purchase vehicles below invoice and use the factory rebates too. I bought my 2001 quadcab 4x4 for $21,900.

Thought I'd give a update on this one....
My Friend finally broke in his Thunderbolt and decided to race again this weekend. Not much of a change... still whooped his butt, but he's gotten better at driving it, but nothing short of a bottle will help him.

I know this is going to be a flame post but o-well. I watched Motortrend last night. They pulled out a Thunderbolt svt concept truck. It is ugly,but.... The thing had a supercharged 4.6. small meats up front and huge meats on the rear. They replaced the control arms to the f-150 control arms. For the added weight. I don't rember all the specs.

460 lb. tourqe
1/4 13.6 seconds.
I know it was a concept but still that would be a bad ranger that is ugly.

I caught the same show this morning but did not catch the "concept" part of it until the end. They had me goin for a minute there.
I could've swore they said they put the 5.4L in that 'thing' though. Anyway, glad it won't be going into production.

I saw the Motortrend show also. The Thunderbolt that was on that program is at this point only a concept vehicle. It was running a 5.4 liter supercharged V-8. I am not a Ford fan, but must admit I was impressed with its performance, 13.5 second 1/4 mile.

Mr.Sleepy...You beat a Ranger with your 4.7 Dakota,Hehehe I sure wouldn't brag about your kill.To race a Heavy under powered 6cyl Ranger is like comparing oranges to apples.That would be like me racing my Mustang against my Dakota,my Mustang would blew the doors off my Dak + the hood and fenders.
My Dakota runs real good and I love it,but I got dusted by a new f-ing VW Passssat station wagon.Well we ran from about 35 on,but he pulled me about a car all the way.I would rather get beat by a school bus,than F-ING VW.

Hey Sponge,How much less did that VW weigh,than your Dakota?I think you have another apples and oranges comparison there.I have a buddy who had a VW vr6 gti,chip,K&N,full exhaust....I would never line up with that car,it's prolly just shy of my RT's horsepower,and a hella lot lighter.I just tell him to meet me on the highway,:)

You have an auto, yes? Did your truck downshift to get you into the powerband where it would be useful?
If you had a 4.7 with a 5-speed, I would think you could have downshifted and had the VW for lunch.

tsp159...my truck did down shift very nicely,but it had to throw all 4,100 lbs foreword know.I was chaped ,because I couldn't get to him from a dead start.I think I would have dusted him up to 98 mph.Hehehe Todd yes my truck and that VW are like oranges to apples.I don't know what that VW had in it,but it did surprise me.

Ed, Spongebob, man you guys stole my fire. I was just about to get into it about the original Ford T-Bolt. 64 Fairlane 2dr. Sport coupe with a 427 dual quad mid riser intake... MMMMMmmmmm. Too bad Ford had to go and bastardize another strong name. Cobra, Marauder, Thunderbolt, Falcon..The only remake I wouldn't mind owning is the GT-40, I mean Ford GT. I'd kill for that car. Really. Please, name someone. Seriously.

As strange as it may sound, I actually like the Marauder, it just has 2 doors too many :) And Cobra imo only belongs on one car, the original Shelby one, you know, the one that goes from 0-100-0 in 13 secs :). And funny thing is, I'm a GM guy when it comes to cars (Olds in particular), I gave GM a chance when I got a '95 S-10 new. Needless to say, I only had it for just about 2 years, it was in the dealer every month, and it's been all Daks since, my '97 2wd V6 CC and my current '01 4x4 4.7 QC. Dodge will be my only choice for trucks, hands down.

Ed, you must be a fan of the old Hurst/Olds. I had one very briefly about 4 years ago. I'd have loved to have the original, but I had the late model based off of the G-Body. Had it for about 4 hours, until some !@#$%# (expletive, possibly racial) decided to gank it from a parking lot while I was inside. Wish I had the alarm then that I do now. 50cal DE works wonders for persuation. Nice noise-maker too. Come to think of it, that rust bucket wasn't work prison time. Thanks, car thief, wherever you are!!!
