Subject: Which Dakota? IP: Logged
Message: This may seem like a pretty vague question, but this fall I plan on selling my 93 4x4 longbed Dakota w/318,3.55's,auto, and 103,000 mi. I am having trouble picking a truck. It is definantly gonna be a Dakota but I dont know which one to get. I am looking for one with the body style of 97-01, 4x4, V8, auto tranny, a/c, and short bed. I want one that can handle its own offroad, but has plenty of muscle for street "competitions". That is where I get stuck. I dont know which gears, V8, auto tranny, transfer case to look for. I also need this truck as a daily driver. If anyone has any ideas or has a similar truck like the one I am looking for, please help.

Message: Andrew, I have a 00 4x4 3.92 4.7L CC auto. and would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a good 4x4/street vehicle. I previously owned a 99 dakota with the 5.2 and the 3.55 gears and the 4.7 is sooo much nicer of an engine.I have gone offroad several times ( desert, mountains rivers ) and have yet to become stuck ( other than clearance problems). The only thing I do not like about the newer 01 is that they have a push-button 4x4 switch on the dash rather than the old lever, like mine. Just opinion though.
If you can afford it go with a 00 or newer.

Message: Thanks albert. What year did they stop using the old 4x4 lever shifter? Is the 4.7 alot different when it come to service and tune-ups?

Message: They switched to the push-button 4x4 switch in 2001, which is when they also changed to a different interior.
I havn't had any major service on my engine so I couldn't tell you about the costs, but you should probably expect to pay a little more than the 5.2. I do all my scheduled maintenance myself.

Message: Andrew,
I gave the same question LOT's of thought. It all depends upon what you really want.I wanted a good general purpose vehicle, NON-SUV (too yuppie-ish) with 4wd and the QuadCab is perfect for me. I can haul 4-5 people PLUS "dirty" STUFF, pull some decent weight and go almost anywhere in any weather - those were MY personal preferences. I don't have my DAK just yet, but I hope to take delivery next week.

Message: Well, I have a 98 RC 1x4 5.2 auto with NON suregrip 3.55's. Had a 90 Dak 3.9 premag 5spd with the 3.2x's. Guess what kinda truck I am getting next...that's right, another Dak. I am leaning towards a QC in Silver, 4.7 3.92SG with a 5 speed ( I will NEVER EVER EVER get another Dak with an auto!!!!!) If I am making the $$$$ at the time it will be a 4x4.
I can give a little comparison on the 2. We have a 99 Durango 4x4 5.2 and a 00 Durango 4x4 4.7 (at work) The 4.7 is so much faster than the 5.2. Some guys thought it was a bigger engine! I had to correct them hehe. It revs so easily, and doesn't have "lag spots" like the 5.2 has. If that makes sense.
Good thing about the 5.2 is that is has been around forever, and there are lots of mods.
hope I didn't get off subject =]
