Well I dont like to admit it,but it definitely looks like oiled polyurethane foam is the way to go if you want maximum protection in an airfilter.Oiled cotton flows great but I`d rather stop the dirt cold.

I don't like to admit it either, but I think the person who started this thread works for amsoil. Oh I mean a company that manufactures oiled foam products.

dbbaker, they also strip down and rebuilt sprint car engines alot more often then someones everyday car/truck. I am interestred to hear peoples opinions on this subject and maybe some tests of some kind to prove which is better. I know that foam filters are superior to k&n's on ATVs, so i am interested to here about them with autos.

right on the back of a K&N air filter box you can see a flow comparison chart of a Amsoil LT-31 Foam Filter, Fram CA326 Paper Filter, and a K&N E-1500 Filter (all 12" X 3.5" filters).

The flow chart is as follows:

New Foam...376 cfm
Dirty K&n...463 cfm
New Paper...508 cfm
New K&n...887 cfm

*test note: all air filter elements were flow tested at .3" H20 (water restriction and then converted to 1.5" H20 restriction by using the square law formula

edelbrock intake, modified manifold, headers, flowmaster, 24lb injectors, mp throttle body, 1.7 rr, msd 6a, msd wires, blaster 3, b&m shifter, shift kit, coilovers, drag shocks, ladderbars, panhard bar, 150# coils, electric fan, oil cooler, 180 thermostat, autolite 3923, corbeau seats, slicks, mojo

dbbaker, are you driveing a sprint car??? Do you run an exposed gear rear diff? Are your cylinders honed smooth as glass? How about a carberator you running a carb? Nascar runs dry sump oiling system are you? What does any of this have to do with the origanal post. I think that the post was about K&N filters allowing more dirt into the engine then a foam filter. I am pretty sure that most everyone agreed that they flow better. Flow was not the main point of contention PROTECTION was. I still have not seen anyone decide to test their oil with a K&N filter and then test oil with Amsoil filter in place. It seems like an easy way to find out for your self! Amsoil is about protection first and formost. The main thrust of their marketing is about extended drain intervals and American V8's lasting 400,000 +++++ miles. P.S. I do not sell or work for Amsoil I have been slowly switching over to amsoil as I test their products and find out the truthfulness of their claims.

A K&N air filter that has been oiled with the spray that K&N sells for their filters will NOT outflow an AMSOIL filter that has been properly oiled with the AMSOIL air filter oil.

A dry or improperly serviced K&N will flow lots of air but it will let a lot of dirt through also.

FACT:
The absolute best air filtration system ever designed was the old "oil bath" air cleaner and the oiled foam is the next best thing to it.

And NO I don't work for AMSOIL either but I do know what I am talking about !

Yeah,I remember the old oil bath air cleaners Dr.D,I had a friend that had a 73 Ford pickup with an oil bath air cleaner. He said it was kind of a pain to maintain but he thought it seemed to work well.We all thought it was kinda primitive but I guess in retrospect it was better than swelled up no flow paper.
