Subject: 98 R/T 46RE Trans. Leak IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 Dakota 5.9 R/T. It has the 46RE transmission in it. The problem I'm having with the trans. is it started leaking from the rear seal where the driveshaft yolk slides into the trans. I replaced the seal and a week later it was leaking again. I thought maybe the driveshaft was out of balance and wearing out the seal, so I took it to a machine shop that balances driveshafts. They watched it run while under the truck, and said there was nothing wrong with the driveshaft. It remained smooth up to 70mph. I put a second seal in it, and a few days later, it started to drip again. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem or heard of this and might give me some info on this problem.

Message: Where are you buying your seals from? Is there a transmission shop close by that you can buy higher quality seals from?
I had a problem with a GM transmission rear seal one time and I found a transmission shop that had a seal that had been designed to eliminate the leakage problem that my transmission was known to have and it cost a whopping $5.00.
I am willing to bet that there is a seal out there that is designed better than the factory seal design that you keep buying from the parts store.
A lot of times transmission shops will know of problems that transmissions have, and have a part that has been designed to cure the problem.
The parts stores on the other hand grin every time you come in to buy a new OEM seal and more fluid because that my friend is their business.

Message: Well I do not have the Unit Repair Manual for the 46RE but I am willing to bet that you are changeing the wrong seal. Before even get to the tail shaft yoke seal there should be another seal or bushcing. I am guessing that it is defective. Take a look at a Unit Repair manual or at least a Service Manual.

Message: your going through what I already have. Its not that seal, its the yoke that slides into the seal you have replaced, and attaches to the driveshaft. Look really closely to where the leak is and you will see what Im talking about. You have to replace that whole piece.

Message: i had the same exact problem on my 99 r/t. they ened up replacing the whole rear housing on the trasmission and that finally fixed it. i had replaced one seal myself and the dealer did twice. i called another dealer that specializes in dodge trucks and they said that the bushing in some of them were spinning loose letting the yoke beat the heck out of the seal till it leaks. i told the dealer this that had it and they replaced it. no more leaks or blown seals and it has been about 15000 miles later.

Message: I'm on my 4th seal, and it still leaks. Let me know if you find out a fix. My trucks a 99 R/T. The first time I replaced it, it sealed for 2 months, now I've put in 3 back to back and it is still weeping out. I've been using Mopar seals at $25 a pop.
