Message: ga dak - it depends on whether or not you have the factory tow package installed. If your Dakota has the factory installed tow package, there is a flat 4 pin connector under the dash board for hooking an electric brake controller into. Adapter harnesses are available at many trailer stores. If you don't have the factory tow package, you can get a 7 pin wiring harness from Dodge for about $100. It provides all the connections for your lights, trailer power and brakes. It is a plug-in job and takes about an hour to install. The only thing bad about this unit is the wire sizes are a little small for the trailer power and trailer brakes. They appear to be in the 12-14 gauge range. This harness does not have the 4 pin connector for hooking up a brake controller. To hook up a brake controller requires a connection to the battery, ground, brake lights (white wire with tan stripe), and the wire to the trailer brakes. If you need a brake controller, Tekonsha and Hayes makes several units. Try www.campingworld.com or www.brakecontroller.com. The latter has the best prices I've seen and free 2-day shipping. They also have the wiring adapter that I mentioned earlier.

Message: I am using the Tekonsha SINTINEL Controller and I LOVE IT!! .... However my next one will be the Tekonsha PRODIGY and here is why :
PRODIGY™ Features
Applies power to the trailer brakes in proportion to vehicle's deceleration.
No level adjustment necessary - it adjusts itself to varying terrain as you drive.
The only inertial control that works proportionally in reverse - great for backing into tough spots.
Digital display depicts voltage delivery to trailer during braking.
Continual diagnostics check for proper connection, shorted magnet condition and much more.
Exclusive "boost" feature gives users the ability to apply more initial trailer braking power when towing heavier trailers.
Power-saving mode reduces drain on battery when vehicle is not in use.
Preassembled wire harness for simple hookup.*
Unique pocket mount allows for flexible mounting options.
Quick and easy disconnect feature allows user to remove and store the control when not in use.
Made for up to four-axle trailer brake systems
Meets N.H.T.S.A. regulations regarding tow vehicle/trailer light activation.
Limited lifetime** warranty.

Message: A brake controler like those mentioned above that you will have to supply. The least fancy Tekonsha is working fine for me.

Message: I'm with Kowalski. Anything you can tow with a Dakota doesn't require anything but the basic brake controller (any brand).
The bag of wires is for the controller and plugs under the dash.

Message: I will be trailing a 1962 Buick Electra Convert on a flat bed trailer that weighs 2000LBS with electric brakes. I have been told that it will handle it 6500 towing capacity.

Message: I'd go with the PRODIGY. I have one and it is much better than the cheap unit I had before. It just seems to do a better job getting the trailer stopped. There is no where near as much jerking around due to the trailer either braking too early or too late (or a combination of both). It is trivial to adjust and you can easily move it, although I don't.

Message: I agree, pop a few extra bucks and go with the Prodigy. If you get in a sticky situation it might save your azz,,, and a wrecked truck and trailer.
I have the Prodigy and needed to jam on the brakes realy hard a couple of times. Seemed like the trailer wasn't even there, the Progigy applied the brakes very smooth, didn't lock up the brakes or feel the trailer push the truck.

Message: I get the same great braking out of my cheap Tekonsha - no jerking here. Just a matter of setting it up correctly, whatever you get.
