I am about ready for another oil change and on my break at work today I checked my oil. I was shocked to see I had about 1/8" of oil on the dip-stick. Last week the oil line was a little more than an 1/8" above the add line! I had to add a quart and that makes 2 or 3 quarts between oil changes that I have to add. I am sur I was on level ground before I checked it and I am not leaking a drop while it is parked for any length of time. What could be the problem? My truck is a 93 4x4 Dakota w/318, and 103,000mi.

Could be burning it? Though 103,000 miles isnt much. Check your coolant for contamination also. It must be leaking internally somewhere.

I'm with Ron on this one....

Pop your air hat off of the TB and crack the blades wide open (engine off). Grab a flashlight and take a look down the intake...if you see any puddles of oil in the bottom of the intake manifold (look down the bores for this), you've got yourself a blown belly-pan gasket.

103K miles...2-3qts is a lot for just bad rings...unless it smokes all the time.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Checked my oil today after adding a quart and now its 1/8" above the FULL line. I guess I didnt wait long enough after I shut the truck off before checking the oil yesterday. I would also like to know what is the average amount of oil I should have to add between oil changes with a V8 with 103,000 miles on it? Ever since I have owned the truck(7 months) I usually have to add 1, maybe 2 quarts. Is this normal?

Usage of oil at 100K miles differs dependent on internal engine wear. That much between changes seems excessive, however, if you're filling above the FULL line you could be creating more problems than you're solving.

I use a little less than a quart between changes but I think most of that is due to the 18 year old kid not filling it all the way at the Valvoline place. They can only put X amount of oil in.

I always check my oil in the morning after it has been sitting and everything has drained back into the pan (minus the filter). Is this the correct method? I figure I get the best info on how much is actually in the engine that way (to prevent overfilling).
