 Subject: Coil instal woes

Got my Accel coil today but could not get the two screws from the original screws out, they would not budge.
I put some 3in1 oil on it to loosen it up (maybe) but have mostly stipped out the screw head.
Any suggestions? I had thought about just drilling them out, are the screws 1/4x20?

When I took the stock coil off the bracket on my 93 Dakota, I had a hell of a time. I soaked the old screws with liquid wrench, let them sit for a bit, and used hard pressure on a proper size screwdriver. As far as getting out the old screws, in the shop I work in, when we strip out a phillips screw, we put the piece(with the screw) in a vice. Then we take a 6" long torx bit slightly larger than the stripped ot part on the screw and hammer it in to the slightly smaller hole until its in so tight it can stand up with no support. Then you take one of those hex bit holders that fits the end of torx bit, put the hex bit holder in a drill if possible for torque purposes, and reverse tthe stripped screw out.

The absolute best tool out there for stubborn screws and bolts is called the impact screwdriver. It's not air driven, but its big, and you put the tip on the screw like usual, then take a hammer and pound the handle and it will come out slowly.

Look for a product called PB3. This stuff leaves WD40 and all other penetrates in the dust. Apply it several times over the course of a couple days.
Also, if you have room to swing a hammer, you can "make" your own impact gun. When you or a trusted friend hits the scredriver, twist the screwdriver. A theory based on the old rock drillers star drill that really does work.

I just did the same thing a couple of months ago, and had the same problem. I took the mounting bracket off of the head, and then I used a channel lock around the edges of the screw and twisted them off. I replaced the original screws with ones down at the local hardware store. Good luck.

I removed the bracket (2 minutes) and then was able to fully 'lean' on the screws, they came out. I cleaned the bracket and reinstalled the coil with new 14mm bolts which a socket will fit on.
