Subject: Fair Price for 30K Service? IP: Logged
Message: Hello everyone,
Just wondering what everyone thinks is a fair price for a 30K service at a Dodge Dealer? I know I could just "do it myself" and save a lot of money, but I don't have the time, nor the automotive skillz to service a transmission, or fuel injector. My local dealer quoted $425 for the following:
LOF (lube, oil, filter)
Transmission service
Inspect F/R Brakes
Rotate/Balance Tires
Change Spark plugs
Change Air Filter
Service/flush fuel injectors
Is this a fair price?

Message: No, that is not a fair price. You can do an oil change at Wal-Mart for $20 or so, right? Dunno, I do my own for less than $10. Spark plugs are also easy, around $3 per? Pull a plug wire, and with a simple plug socket and socket wrench you've pulled them all, gap with a $0.50 gap tool, install the new ones and re-install the plug wires. This is very very simple and worth every penny in savings. Air filter is the simplest yet--open a couple clips, remove and replace. Service/flush fuel injectors is horse manure. Use reputable gasoline with fuel injector additives (most name brands have this) and you won't need a flush. Brake inspection is absolutely free at Car-X or Midas. Rotate tires is maybe $10. Hell, with the free brake inspection, you may be able to talk them into having you walk the tires back to the rotated locations and that's free too! I've done that before.
That leaves "lube" which I think you can do with your Wal-mart oil change, but there may not be many grease points on the truck. Lord knows we wish there were on the front suspension. And transmission service? What is that? Drain and fill? This too can be done at an oil change place for less than $40. I wouldn't pay more than $150-200 all told if I refused to do anything myself.
