Subject: dry pavement only 4wd IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 2002 dakota club cab 4x4 sport plus. What is this about 4wd that can't be used on dry pavement? i have auto tranny with 4.7l V8. If someone knows the story behind this please respond. Thank-you.

Message: Unless you got the AWD option, don't run part time 4WD on dry pavement. You will destroy your transfer case in a hurry. Think of it this way: going straight down the road, your tires should run at the same speed (assuming all tires are worn equally and inflated so all are the exact same diameter). Turn the steering wheel even slightly off center, and each wheel takes a different path through the corner. These 4 different paths mean that each wheel is turning a different speed than the others.
The AWD transfer case compensates for this by allowing different wheel speeds front to rear (left to right speed difference is already handled by the open diff up front and either open or limited slip at the rear). In other words, dry pavement is okay...there is slip allowed front to rear.
The part time 4WD transfer case locks the front and rear axles together, forcing them to run at the same speed. On dry pavement, the wheels need to be allowed to spin at different speeds to be able to turn corners. If no front to rear slip is allowed, that will cause binding in the driveline, hopping tires...something has to give, and chances are it would be the transfer case.

Message: so wet pavement or offroad will allow this slip... Oops, I have 151 miles on the truck and have used 4wd on dry pavement for about 20 of those (another 20 in a thunderstorm with nice wet roads). Damn salesman didn't mention things like this. I guess I need to read the owner's manual.
