This is not my first rodeo, (manual). I've always had a manual. Anyway, when getting on it(accelerating) heavy, third often grinds and has trouble with the shift.
Took it to the dealer recently, had a manager drive it with me. Well, he didn't shift anywhere near as fast as I do and he had no prob.
When just cruising and shifting slow, no problems.
Will/does a hurst conversion improve this? Rlight now, theres no direct app. for the 4.7 5spd. The latest tips I saw posted heated and bent the hurst lever to miss the dash.
My 6yr old Mazda protege 5spd shifts like a dream compared to this.
Any experience with this?

HAVE A 4.7 WITH A HURST SHIFTER.IT IS GREAT.FROM EXPERIENCE,THIRD IS WHAT MAKES OR BREAKS A RACE.PRACTICE,PRACTICE.THE HURST IS CLEANER/CRISPER.GOT IT FROM JEGS.IF YOU NEED TIPS ON A INSTALL LET ME KNOW.

They don't make a shifter for the '01 that I know of.

Change the fluid to amsoil HDD 5-30,it helps smooth out the shifts.I was skepticle about amsoil before but it helps

guys,
the oil will help.did not heat up the stick.i think you have to get the shifter stop for 3rd in just the right spot.i kept the boot off for a while and tweeked on it.it still gets close(boot)but not the stick itself.for the money i like the shifter feel over stock.

when racing 3rd gear will sometimes grind for me as well if i am shifting very quickly- i think the problem is clutch isnt all the way in when u think it is.
