Subject: 4X4 vs 4X2 with limited slip

I now have a 2001 Dakota CC with 4.7 and auto. How does the 4X2 with limited slip perform in snow compared to the 4X4. I live in western Virginia and we have had mild winters with little snow for the past several years.

Thanks
Ken

you should be alright, but don't expect to be able to pull people out in snowy conditions. If you put some snow tires on there, that'll even help you out more. But as for comparison.....given they both have the same tires, power, and body style the 4x4 is just going to be so much better

I traded my (sigh) 1999 s-10 extreme in for my 2002 CC 4x4 4.7L 3.92's w/LSD and the only way I'll go back to 2wd is if I buy an r/t or srt-8 if that's what their going to call it.

It's a great feeling when there's a bunch of snow out, and I don't have to worry about it. and of course the added ground clearance is nice too

i live in canada where 40 cm of snow is not
uncommon. I have a 2x4 w/lsd. Never got
close to being stuck once. Good tyres and a
little sand in the bed works well.

Thanks for the info on the 40 cm of snow. I would really like to have the R/T Quad Cab but it only comes in 2 wheel drive. We don't usually get a lot of snow here 6" - 10" each snowfall with about 4 good snows a season. I live on a hill and 4 wheel drive sure helps to get home from work.

Thanks
Ken

I have had the same thoughts, LSD has worked well for me except once and that was enough to make me want to get 4wd.

Big issue for me however is side access to bed, the 4wds have enough extra height that make it difficult to reach over and pull stuff out of the bed without having to crawl in.

I have been flamed here B4 for asking about ways to lower a 4wd for to get access by the "off roading" crowd but after some helpful advice (also on this board) my plan is to detension the front torsion bars and remove the small rear leaf. I think that will give me a "snow be damned" vehicle that will still function as a truck with reasonable bed access.

Getting stuck that once (in seven years of ownership) was too much
