Subject: Limited Slip Worn Out IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota, 5.2L, 5 spd. Manual Trans., 2WD, 9.25" Differential, 3.90 Gear Ratio with a Dana Trac-Loc Limited Slip. The truck has about 90K miles on it and the Limited Slip is shot. It has been making some real bad grumbling/grinding sounds especially when I decelerate and the dash warning lights came on for the ABS and Brake lights. I pulled the dif. cover and found lots of clutch plate debris in the fluid..I drained and flushed the diff. and put new gear oil in, as well as, limited slip additive. It's still making lots of noise but it's not as bad.. Anyway my question is do I need to replace the Trac-Loc limited slip or can the diff. be easily converted to an open diff. there by eliminating the Dana Trac-Loc?? If this cannot be done I was considering pulling the Dana Trac-Loc limited Slip and putting in a PowerTrax No-Slip Traction System. Please help me with some ideas or suggestions.
Note: I really don't do much off-road riding except for some driving on dirt roads when I go camping and maybe the ocassional light snow in the winter.
Thanks in advance for you help and ideas..

Message: IMHO, as u have 2wd, your preliminary choices would be either fix the LSD or put in a locker or convert permanently to open diff.
However, as you'd be in some light snow/ice, you might get into a situation where a powered inside wheel and freewheeling outside wheel in a curve (especially turning uphill in heavy traffic) would be a problem. In this case, stay away from the locker.
If you're doing any sort of towing or driving with an empty box in slippery conditions, fix the LSD.
If you're driving on pretty much good gravel or paved road, not many hills, no towing, I'd just set up your diff as an open diff, and invest in a pair of good snow tires and some sandbags in the wintertime.
