Yes K&N air filters are good. They were criticized by amsoil or amsoil dealer in an article entitled "K&N bites the dust" to promote amsoils own foam filter which has turned out to be inferior. So dont remove your K&N air filter! Its based on 40 years of testing and real world use and it works!

You mind giving me the link to the "negative comments". I for one have never seen AmsoilSponsor post a negative K&N thread. But I will. :-) Here is my 2 cents:

From a lube engineer's perspective that looks at a hundred or so oil analysis results a day, I would highly recommend you or anyone running a K&N or other aftermarket air filter do an engine oil analysis to determine that the filter is indeed doing its job.

I can EASILY spot K&N equipped vehicle oil analysis results as in 90% of cases the filter keeps out bricks and birds very effectively but little else.

The #1 cause of reduced engine life is dirt. The #1 engine oil alert I look at is dirt.

If you look at a K&N filter you can see through the medium very easily.

While Oil treated gauze(sp)is supior to paper and oil treated foam for flow it does not do well in real world conditions for keep small dirt particle out. The problem with them is vibration. In a static enviroment they work great but once you start vibrateing them the way an engine does the amount of dirt that gets past them is awful. The best metthod I have come across yet is the foam filter in an oil bath. They have not used that method on cars or trucks since the 50's or 60's.The better the airflow the less dirt it stops. Amsoil was not lying to you! If you want to build HP then use an oil treated guaze filter if you want to keep dirt out use oil treated foam. I have used a K&N cone style filter on most vechiles I owned since 1992 but I was very aware of their short comeings. I am going to guess that AMsoil probably brought up the ASE test that simulate real world enviroment. I have not seen this from Amsoil but it has been published before in alot of HP type magazines. Eddle Brock and Accel used to run similar adds.

This was copied from www.cummins.com and if you do not believe me then go see for yourself.

Does Daimler/Chrysler authorize the use of high-flow aftermarket air filters such as K&N with my Cummins engine?

No. Daimler/Chrysler and Cummins do not recommend the use of increased flow air filters such as K&N, because they can allow contaminants into the intake that can ruin an engine (scoring the sides of the pistons, etc.)

**************************************************

I was a user of K&N myself until I spoke with some guys that did a lot of dirt track racing and they told me to spare my engine and use oiled foam. I use the AMSOIL filter in my truck and the UNI in my ATV ..... Both "OILED FOAM" Filters !!

Is it really necessary to throw away my K&N air filter in favor of oiled foam? By the way I have a stock type K&N in an original airbox not the high-flow kind.Does that mean there is less or more danger of dirt getting in,like for example in a stock airbox that might be warped? Or perhaps I should just go back to paper filters?

Keep your K&N well serviced and or find a way to use one of their pre-filters or sell it and buy whatever you feel does the best job.
I use the AMSOIL filter and they do not last forever but they trap and hold more dirt, they flow well and they cost very little to service compared to the gauze type air filters.

I think the questions to be asked here are did Amsoil really use industry standardized filter media testing and use test conditions that accurately replicated real world conditions under a cars hood? I think not.I think Amsoil manipulated the test results with their "machine" just to discredit K&N.So gentlemen, dont throw away your K&Ns!

Art,
The Amsoil Two-Stage air filter number for all Dakota and Durangos with the 4.7 is the "TS-29".

It is a complete filter in itself and when it does need servicing it is very easy to clean with a strong degreaser and an old dishpan.
