Subject: 3.55 or 3.92? IP: Logged
Message: I just ordered a 2001 Dakota CC w/4.7 and multispeed auto. I drive to work and back 60 miles a day at 70-75 mph, 5 days a week. I tow 4100 lbs (boat), 1-2 times a month 30 miles and twice a year(vacation)for 350 miles one way. Which axle ratio is better suited for my driving? I ordered with the 3.55 since the bulk of my driving is highway speed. Will the 3.55 handle the weight? Any help is greatly appreciated as I have only a little time to change the order. THANKS!!

Message: I would definitely opt for the 3.92. It won't hurt your highway driving that much compared to the 3.55's and it'll definitely help you with your towing. It cost $35 to do it through the factory. If you wait and change your gears after you take delivery it'll cost around $600.
Another thing you may want to consider is Limited Slip Differential.

Message: Hmm...the reason I hesitated, is that when I went to the 3.73 ratio on my Ranger, the gas milage and acceleration seemed to suffer. I drive highway about 18,000 miles and tow about 1700 miles a year. What do you think the difference in gas milage will be between the two ratios? Anyone know the towing capacity of the 3.55?

Message: I can't tell you what will happen to your gas mileage but I can give you an idea about your engine RPMs at a given speed of 70 mph. These RPM speeds assume your wheel diameter is 28" and you're in overdrive.
3.55 diff = 2,058 RPMs @ 70 mph.
3.92 diff = 2,268 RPMs @ 70 mph.

Message: Change your order to get the 3.92 LSD, especially if you ordered the 4X4 and are getting the bigger wheels and tires. Mine is equipped like the one you ordered, and it is rated to tow 4800 pounds. Getting the 3.92 gears will increase that by 800-1000 pounds. It is possible to come near or even exceed your tow rating with no problems, but the 3.92's add a larger margin of error. Everything that I've read shows that unloaded gas mileage will only suffer by about 1 mpg.

Message: Thanks for all your quick responses!! The truck was in D in the process and the dealer said they think they just got the change in under the wire (I guess D1 is to late). So I should see a performance increase over the 3.55 that I test drove? I was really impressed by its acceleration. Again, thanks all for the help!

Message: Yes, Dave, you will notice a difference with the 3.92's. Not a radical difference but you'll know.

Message: Ron:
Im in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. About 30 mins west of Spokane, WA. Yep, kinda out there... Not very many people are moding pickups (you'd think so, but everyone is moving up here with their ricers, just wait till they try and drive it in one of our NorthWest winters!). Its hard to get advice with not much of a community, and the ones that do mod pickups are usually doing it to full size fords and Rams. What might the cost be to switch to 3.92s? I might be able to do it my self (my family is a bunch of week end mechanics with to many tools and to much time), but if it doesnt cost to much, i'd rather just drop it off at a shop. :) ... so im lazy :P

Message: Glen, it depends on whether or not you want to install a limited slip at the same time. If you just do a gear change it can be done (around Dallas) for under $400 including parts and labor. If you install a limited slip and gears it should cost around $800.

Message: That may be in Dallas but here in California the racing shops that specialize in differentials charge close to $600 to change out gears and close to $1000 to do LSD + gears. That's what the pain was. I was smart enough to get LSD when I ordered the truck but the gearing I didn't pay attention to. I could have gotten 3.92's from the factory for $35 . Doing it yourself is fine if you can set the lash. If you've never done it before it may take you a while. Make sure you have the pinion bearings replaced when doing this, no matter what. A shop that doesn't do this should not be allowed to touch your truck.

Message: Ah sweet! Whats the avg. price just for the gears (or kit if there is such a thing). Maybe if i could find a manual for my dak, i'll do it my self, but i dont have one. My dad says we could figure it out, but this is my baby (that i drive like a madman). Now i just need to pay off the cat back i just got, and save a little for more mods!

Message: Glen, check around before you attempt it yourself and also before you pay someone $300 to install them. The average price around the country for gear installs is around $200. And that price is by some of the best in the country, you just have to know where to look. You should be able to get Richmond gears for around $179. The install kit should be around $99. Now, when I said around $400 just for gears that is assuming cheaper gears like Genuine Gear for around $119 and a cheap $50 install kit. I only use Richmond gears though because we are very hard on our vehicles and Geniune Gears seem to have a lot of defects and sometimes people will charge more to install them because they tend to be harder to set up. I consider myself to be a decent mechanic but I don't trust myself to do my gears because I know how hard I am on them. I have done them before and it is not to difficult you just have to be sure everything is perfect. I only pay $100 for professional installs around here. Let me know where you are and I'll see if I know of a good shop around you.
