Subject: Stalls when warmed up
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 93 Dakota 5.2L 4WD with 120,000. The oxygen sensor is 3 months old, and that is when I cleaned the throttle body. No Check Engine light.

It starts fine when cold. Once warmed up, the idle is very rough and the engine stalls. I can get it moving by adding throttle, and once moving it is fine. When the RPMs drop below 800, it will stall.

I was guessing that the Coolant Temperature Sensor might be giving the computer the wrong impresion, but the more I looked at Chiltons, the less confident I am in this quess.

Any suggestions?

Steve

You might have a bad EGR valve if so equipped. We had two 318's do the same thing at around 100K miles. Ran fine cold, probably from idle enrichment.

Steve, First check for stored codes in the computer, then try resetting the computer & see if it idles ok...My 93 3.9 had the same problem & would idle fine with the reset. It straighten itself out after about 5 resets of that computer. It took the computer anywhere from 150 to 750 miles to relearn & the stalling would occur again....My o2 sensor was 1 year old & I replaced the temp sensor out of routine maintence (136k then).

Been running fine & I still am trying to find the cause before it happens again....I was leaning towards the o2 sensor but held back replacing it due to it's age & price....Look at the sensors used running cold (mode 2)& hot(mode 3)...

Keep us posted....
