Subject: Suspension Questions - R/T vs Sport

Does a Dakota R/T have a different suspension package than a Sport model? The reason I ask was I was looking at some wheels for my Dakota that were the same size as R/T wheels - but I want the truck to sit on them like R/T's do on their's. Make sense? If they are different, can you buy the R/T suspension package? Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure but on the sport it seems like the tire & handeling group sits lower than one without that group. Do you have the tire & handeling group?

My brother has the sport group on his truck and it sits about an inch lower than mine. Will be installing the belltech lowering kit for mine shortly though. I'm guessing here but I think the R/T's sit an inch lower than the sport's.

You can have a Sport without the tire & handeling group and I think you can get an SLT with the tire & handeling group. I don't think it matters whether or not it is a Sport, I think it's that group that matters. All RTs have a tire & handeling group. My only question is whether or not the tire & handeling group is the same on the RT as it is on the others (except the wheels and tires)?

The R/T dakotas sit 1" lower than other dakotas. I think the only thing thats different about the tire and handling package is the rims and tires (15x8 used on the durango insted of the 15x7s) and the addition of a rear swaybar. If you are going to run the 17x9" R/T rims you need to buy the fender flares that are used on the R/T. Because of the backspacing on the rims, they will stick out of the fenders about and inch if you dont.

Ok, so it sits 1" lower. Can you buy the R/T suspension? See - I hate losing ride with aftermarket lowering springs. I want a nice ride, and nice looks.

I don't see why you wouldent be able to buy the R/T suspencion through a dodge dealer, but you will pay a whole lot for it. If you want to lower it just 1" go to the aftermarket, and you will pay a fraction of the price. There are a lot of company's out there that make a drop kit for the dakota. You can do a 1" spring in front and a 1" block or shackle in the rear. As far as ride quality, you will hardly notice a difference and it will handle a lot better! I have a 4/6 drop on mine and it rides a little rough, but thats because I have a 35 series tire on it. If I put my stocks back on it would ride like new.

I ran my truck without the fender flares for a few months, didn't stick out noticably.. I like my flares, but kinda liked it before =)

Cool, well thanks for answering questions - one other quick one - the R/T flares - can you only get them through Moper/a dodge dealership? I have the 4.7L and was wondering some of the best performance mods - I'm going to do a full exhaust system, and was wondering if JBA made headers for the 4.7 yet, and where I can get a high-flow cat. Air intakes for the 4.7L are scarce I see, any suggestions?

You can get the flares - in the factory colors - straight from the dealer, for around $200.00. Worth every penny, considering the additional cost of paint-matching aftermarket flares (and the paint WILL match). As for the high-flow cat... I put one on my S-10 and actally LOST considerable torque. I think unless you've made drastic modifications to your engine, high-flow cats aren't a good idea (unless you want all your power above 4,000 RPM). A cat-back and intake will allow a lot more flow than stock, while retaining some much-needed back pressure. Just my opinion...
