Subject: Stalling 88 IP: Logged
Message: My 88 3.9 dakota stalls when I put it in gear (AT) and also when slowing to a stop. Could this be when it shifts into first? I doesn't seem to like idling under load. I've checked the plugs, ignition coil, egr, rotor, points, fuel filter, and I think the IAC (where is it). The pipe that supplies air to the cat rusted off so I removed the cat and air pump. When it idles in park, it drops in rpm for a split second every now and then. Do I have to make any other mods to the emitions control to make it run properly? Please help!!

Message: How would I change the idle speed? Isn't it computer set? What's a good way to tell and find a vacuum leak? The timing is computer set also? Thanks for the help

Message: I dont know much about vacume leaks or the idle speed. But the timing is adjusted by turning the distributor one way or the other. You should go to a parts store and get a timing light(about $50)
and a repair manual. Good luck

Message:
to check idle speed, usi.ng a jumper wire, ground thecarburetor switch on the vacuum kicker
disconnect and plug vacuum hoseat air switching valve
disconnect and plug the canister purge hose at the solenoid
remouve pcv valve and let it suck air
connecta tach to coil
run engine at operating temp
wen engine speed stabilized ,turn idle speed screw to the idle speed listed on the engine compartament sticker. turn engine off, reconnect vacuum hoses at air canister and switching valve
instal pcv .the idle speed may change a bit when all is reconnected ,this is normal
to check for a vacuum leak, spray soppy water on your vacuum hoses ,around your intake manifold
if you see bubles its a leak

Message: You would see bubbles on a leaky tire because of the pressurized air pushing outward. A vacuum leak would suck the soap and water in, no bubbles. A good way to suck water into your motor though. Instead use ether (starting fluid). If you hear an increase in RPM when you spray the starting fluid on a suspect area you have a vacuum leak.
