Subject: Stuck auto shift lever? IP: Logged
Message: My '02 Dak has about 300 miles on it, and I've experienced my first snafu, so now I feel like a real member of the brotherhood! The wife and I had stopped at our friendly neighborhood grocery and parked the truck. I normally plant the parking brake with the truck in neutral, then let it settle into place before I put the tranny in Park. When I restarted the truck, I couldn't get the shift lever out of Park. I tugged, pulled...not too hard, as I didn't want to force it...stepped on the brake, let off, etc...no go. I finally shut the truck off, then just turned the key on without starting the truck, stepped on the brake, and the shift lever came right out of Park. I started the truck in neutral, then went into reverse and backed out, but when I slipped it into Drive, the tranny didn't engage. I put it back into neutral, then back into Drive, and it worked OK. My wife and I just sort of looked at each other, and she said, "What kind of a piece of crap did you buy?" I said, "I knew I should've got that Pre-Runner, but I was seduced by good ol' American know how."...hehehe

Message: Pistolero
i also have a 02 CC V6 3.9L
I've never had a problem with mine yet and I got 7,500 miles on it.
If I don;t mind asking by why to you go to neutral so many times?
I'd have that check out at the dealer. sounds like the shifter cable is loose and needs to be to be fixed.

Message: DakMan...I only went into neutral several times on this occasion because I didn't want to go back into Park and maybe get stuck again. I've had trouble getting cars out of Park when the steering has been cranked way over, or the car's parked on a hill and the only thing holding it is the tranny, but this wasn't the case. When I park on anything but a level grade, I always set the brake first with the truck in neutral, so the tranny doesn't hold the weight of the truck while it's parked. Then, I put it into Park. There's no stress on the tranny that way. It hasn't happened to me again, so maybe it was just a case of the electronics losing their mind. If it does it again, I'll probably have it checked out.
