Someone a while back posted that the smoother a tranny shifts, the worse it is. Know why? If it's smooth, that means it goes into two gears at once. It's especially noticeable on the FWD car trannies. So, for instance, on my Sebring when it shifts from 1-2, what really happens is:
first gear clutch disengages 50%, second gear clutch engages 50%, all done smoothly
first gear clutch completely disengages
second gear clutch completely engages
Try this: when your truck is shifting from 1-2, in the middle of the shift, mash the gas pedal. It'll slip like hell, I bet. All this is OK if you're granny-driving, but if you're beating it up it's hell on clutch packs. Thankfully I have Autostick and I "trained" it to slam from one gear to another like a tranny is SUPPOSED to do. Shift kits also modify the behavior to go right from 1-2 instead of that 50/50 bullcrap.
Thankfully my Dakota is a 5-speed stick.
