Subject: Front Wheel Bearing/Hub Assy Replacement IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone replaced the front Hub assy and or wheel bearing on a 4x4 1999 or similar?
Is the hub serviceable with a pressed in bearing or do you need to get the complete hub assy?
I see that Advance Auto Parts website shows a front bearing so I am wondering if it can be pressed out and a new one pressed back in.

Message: I know that it was pressed together at factory.
I am asking if anyone has dissassembled and pressed new bearings into their hubs with success.
I see posts talking about nylon nut coming loose or something and seals gone after low milaege.
Whats the deal here is this a poor design like the ball joint situation?
Is there a aftermarket improved bearing/seal anyone has used?

Message: On the front hubs and barings, they dont press out and the only service you can do is try and pack some grease in them and when you take them off you are going to have to buy a new nut to put on there, you cant use the same one, You have to have the whole thing replaced. And you have to torque them down, highly recomend a torque wrinch, after about a week check the nut again, I have replaced mine before.

Message: I had to replace mine too. You have to replace the whole hub assembly. If you do it yourself, be carefull with the ball joint covers. I managed to rip one of mine.

Message: Geez, what a crappy design.
What nut are you talking about that needs to be torqued? It looks like 3 bolts from the back side hold hub to the knuckle.
How much is a hub assy from dodge?
I called some auto parts stores and they just list the bearings for about 9 bucks each but sounds like you cant press them out so what good are the bearings sold separately?

Message: I had mine replaced last week. Good old Chrysler only sells the sealed hub assembly. It was pretty expensive - $229 Canadian.

Message: Why the hell didnt I buy a Toyota like I was going to?
The price diff has now evaporated due to the ball joints work, and now wheel brgs job.
I am so dissappointed in this kind of Sh*t going bad already on a truck I bought new and only has 37,000 miles on it.
No wonder the trade in value sucks on this truck.
Anyone want to buy it off me 1999 4x4 auto, power everything, forest green, sport trim(black bumpers), 5.2l, big power mirrors, 37,000 miles approx.

Message: The front bearings aren't hard at all. Remove the front drive axle nut (4X4). Remove wheel. Seperate upper balljoint. Remove three bolts...or was it four. Not a bad afternoon job at all (actually only a couple of ours if you have an impact handy.
Ken....98 4x4 125,000 miles, and still makes me smile.

Message: I just bought a 2000 Dakota 6 months ago. As I went to replace my brake pads, I found that 1 of the calliper bolts were stripped. Had to buy a new factory only knuckle $385, just for a basic brake job. Anyone have any advise for replacing the knuckle? Is this a common problem?

Message: i had to hammer on the end of shaft to make it
push inward into the cv joint then took off the
hub bolts and tapped hub to break it free. Be
careful not to damage the threads on the axle. Use
lots of antisieze or marine anti corrosion wheel
bearing grease on the axle splines and hub bolts
when reassembling it.

Message: www.primechoiceautoparts.com com has really good
prices on wheel bearings and other parts for
dakotas and many makes and models. Their ebay
store has slightly better prices than the direct
website for whatever reason. Also they have
package deals like all 4 ball joints and pads and
rotors and bearings deals. Its all their own brand
parts but they are actually pretty decent from
what I have used so far you cannot beat the
prices.
