Subject: RPM pulsates IP: Logged
Message: I've got a '99 Dakota 3.2L that has a pulsating RMP problem. The pulsations occur predominately at about 55 to 65 MPH. They are most severe at 63 MPH when the cruise control is active.
The dealer has replaced the "computer", plugs, wires, rotor and cap. They have also done an induction service on it. I was wondering if it could be a fuel pump issue or a fuel filter problem but I can't even find the fuel filter. It must have one... right?
Any suggestions?

Message: I assume you mean 5.2?
The fuel tank has the filter if there is one. I remember some one saying that there is not one?
The rpms would vary with the cruise on as the road rises and falls and it takes a different amount of engine speed to maintain the speed that your cruise is set at.

Message: Ooops... your right 5.2 is correct.
I just spoke with a local dealer and he confirmed that the filter is in the fuel tank because it will never have to be changed. He also stated that the problem can't be with the fuel pump because they've never had to replace one.
I asked how much it would cost to replace the filter and pump and he said "you don't want to know".
If I didn't want to know I wouldn't have asked.
I've already dumped $600+ dollars into diagnosing this lemon. What's another couple hundred?
I understand placing the pump in the tank. But the filter? That's just plain stupid!
No more Dodge products for me!
Now I know why the Chevy dealer would only give me $7,000 for trade on a new Z71.

It has Auto Trans, power window and door locks, tilt steering wheel, AM/FM w/ cassette, Air, Aluminum rims, tires have about another 10,000 miles on them, bed liner.
It's an extended cab.

Message: I have been experiencing the same problem recently it sounds like from your description. I have a 2000 V6 3.9. With Cruise on it gets worse. With cruise off I notice it doing this when I hit bumps in the freeway.
If this is the same problem. Do you notice or feel the truck surging forward then going back to the way it was just for a fraction of a second?
Kind of like the tranny slipped then caught? I am looking for some help here to.
I had full tranny service done, Diff oil changed, transfer case serviced and tune up. They lloked for wigns of problems but found none. I do not deal with the dealer anymore since they can't figure anything out unless it slaps them in the face.
Sound like the same problem? I have a 40 series flowmaster so I can hear it everytime it does this and I do notice the RPM's fluctuate anywhere from 50 to 200 RPM's.

Message: I am experiencing the same thing with my 98 5.2.It feels like the motor surges and then falls back.It happens when I use the cruise and also when cruise is off.Very noticeable when going highway speeds but not as bad in the city.Could it be bad fuel injectors??

Message: I just confirmed the Cruise control situation on the way home from work tonight and mine is consistantly experinceing this problem. Further to this since I do not use Cruise I originally noticed this problem while hitting bumps and just plain and simple rough freeways.
Do you guys hear the increase? I see it on the tach as well as hear it through the exhaust. Since I have a Flowmaster 40, I can hear the Purr and then a increase in RPM and then it drop's just as quickly as it starts.
I read another post where someone asked if they where experiencing a type of tranny problem, I think, with cruise on. Wonder if this is what they were talking about.
I did just have my injectors cleaned. So I do not think it is that. Probably one of the sensors or vacuum lines.

Message: I am having a similar problem, except my RPMs drop and sometimes stay down for a few seconds then come back to normal, and while they are down it is like nothing happens with I move the gas pedal, the check engine light came on so I took it to the used dealer I bought it from and he hooked up the analyzer to the computer and it said multiple cylinder misfires in cylinders 1, 5, and 8. They checked the spark plugs and wires, everything was fine and gapped correctly. They then checked the distributor cap and rotor thing, the cap was burnt up so they replaced it and took my JET chip out saying that was the problem, since it was making the fuel burn hotter and such, but I think it is starting to do it again...
I have a '97 Dakota SLT CC 5.2L Auto with 56xxx miles.
What else could the problem be?

Message: It is probably your throttle position sensor, located on the drivers side of the throttle body. VERY easy to replace. I have a 99 Durango with the 5.2L that had the same problem.

Message: Not sure if you all have it on, but ... turn the air conditioner off and it goes away. I was on the Turnpike going to PA with the cruise control on and it was really noticable. I turned the cruise off and didn't notice it quite as much. I turned the air conditioner off and it went away.

Message: RPMs jumping up a couple hundred like said above is likely the TPS. It is most noticeable at constant highway speed. I've gone through this. A lot of Durangos on the DOC forum have had this.

Message: I have a '02 5.2L and mine suffers the same thing mostly going up hills at high way speeds where it seems like it wants to jump into another gear but it doesn't. I had it checked a couple of times. The dealer found two cylinders were diformed and two others had gaskets that were shot which allowed oil to get into the cylinder and kill the spark plugs. The repairs worked the next time we went driving but it's back to doing the gear searching thing again. I'm going to ask them about the TPS. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Message: all the surging of about 300 rpm or so is caused by the before mention throttle position sensor. Have them test it at idle part throtle and WOT the first time they just tested mine at idle and said it was fine. 4 trips later they replaced it and it has been fine ever since.

Message: Order the Wells TPS333 from AutoZone. It's $26. It has the same part number markings as the OEM. You can order on-line and pay shipping or you can order from the store and not have to pay shipping. It is not a stocked item, but they can get it in about 3 days, if it is in the distribution system.
