Subject: how much did yuo haggle the dealer down? IP: Logged
Message: Well, I was just curious on how much money you got your Dakotas for after you haggled the dealer? I was looking at a 2003 R/T that had a sticker of right around $26k and I was wondering how much they will come down. Thanks.

Message: I didn't haggle mine, I was happy with that. Just went to look and the saleswoman came out to help us. We talked a bit and she gave me the keys to one of the ones on the lot (SLT, Auto V6) while she went to look and see if there were any sticks around. I'd told her that the biggest hurdle was my trade-in, that she'd have to just about take it off my hands and pay it off.
By the time I came back, she'd crunched some numbers and paid off the Cavalier and -then- added the $1000 rebate that was going on onto whatever I wanted (I got a $2500 rebate total, they were short 1500 on the trade in). We didn't haggle on price for the truck really, I told her what I was willing to pay and she found me a truck that fit what I wanted as closely as she could in my price range.
If you can't get them to budge on the price of the truck, try to get them to give you more for the trade in. I flat out told her I was going to keep the old car if I couldn't get it paid off, they bent over -backwards- to pay it off.

Message: I was able to get the dealer to pony up an extra 1600 bucks on my trade. They came in with a low offer for it and I told them I wasn't interested anymore and that got them crunching numbers and finally I got them for 1600 bucks more, which is closer to what the car was actually worth.
The best piece of advice is to do your homework. Build your truck on the Dodge website. Also, check out www.edmunds.com and see what the value of your new truck is on that with all the options. Also, ask to see the invoice on the truck you are looking at. I was given the invoice on my truck so I knew exactly what the dealer paid for it. I ended up paying about 5000 bucks under invoice with my trade and rebates.
The real thing to consider is, how much are you willing to pay for the truck. If the dealer won't come down to that level, go somewhere else. Just my two cents. Good luck! You'll love the Dakota.

Message: Easiest way...join Costco. It costs $45. Then go to their web site and go to their auto program link. Find a dealer near you that will accept the Costco card. The dealer has to knock money because of the agreement with Costco.
My wife has a 2001 Durango R/T. sticker was 39k, she got it for 34k just by using costco. My dakota R/T was 27,500. with costco and the $2000 rebate, i got it 22,400. I probably could have gotten lower, but i made them eat a lot of money on my trade in.

i told them i work for a rival automanufacturer, and i could get one of theirs at cost, so what did dodge want to offer me to get my business?
it also helped that i bypassed the greedy salespeople and went straight to the salesmanager himself

Message: Another thing that my parents have used to help in their car buying is to have a Citibank Driver's Edge Visa card. You earn 1-5% of each purchase you make and those funds add up and then you can apply them to the purchase of ANY car, no matter what make or model. You can earn up to 500 bucks a year and the funds last 5 years. I plan on applying for one shortly.

Message: My 2001 Dak Quad Cab 4x4 SLT Plus stickered at $29,989.00. I talked them down to $25,500.00. The only options I did not get was the leather seats and over head console with trip computer. Other than those two options I have all the other they offered. I think one guy on here got the same configuration for $24,000. I bought too soon. Allan greenspan had lowered the prime rate 6 times and I though that would be it. Then he lowered it another 10 times. Dodge also had some generious incentives a few months after I bought mine!

Message: F*ck haggling, that's an old school method now. /Most/ consumers are to bright and know what they want and for how much for crap like that.
My local dealer lied and tried to cheat me and would not give me invoice and all the rebates. I was pretty pissed at this, so I said to them to find me a used vehicle that fits and I'll pay whatever they want for it, as long as they could find it. Man did his eyes light up. I gave him the 'specs' and left.
Actually, I called up Dave Smith Motors that same day. They gave me the invoice and rebates and the price I wanted and it was ordered, no hassle buying being their motto.
Meanwhile, my local dealer would call up telling me they are still looking and such while my vehicle was being ordered; I finally told them I bought a new vehicle from Dave Smith and to stop looking. I was kind of happy I got to give a lil sadness to a scum dealer :)
Anyways, if any of you live in the area of Montana, Idaho, Washington, etc., GO TO Dave Smith for a damn good deal. Even better, use them to haggle down your local dealer to get other things like accessories and work wholesale or at a very reduced cost.

Message: $500 under invoice before rebates.
Remember that dealers always have 3% kicked back to them by the manufacturer on any sale, so even at invoice they are making money. This does not included any "dealer incentives" which might be going on at any given time.
You're a sucker if you believe any of the sob stories those people offer about how they are not making any money on a deal. No dealer "gives away" cars or trucks. Just doesn't happen.

Message: I didn't have a trade in when I bought my graphite 2002 RC V6 Sport automatic. I pulled in to the dealer's lot in my Mazda B2500 that was ready to go off lease in a few weeks, and told the salesman who greeted me precisely what I was interested in looking at. Right away, he seemed amazed that I knew exactly what I wanted and had all the details...options, package numbers, everything. He knew that I'd done my homework and BS time was over. I had a list with me that I'd taken from the internet with package prices, even freight and shipping costs. Needless to say, we had a very pleasant negotiating session, even though they tried to sell me the bedliner that was in the truck for $100 more than what the internet had said they went for...I pulled out my list and told him that the price that I had came off of 2 websites, so he knocked the $100 off of it. I ended up getting a brand new truck with more options than I'd wanted (tilt and rear slider, cruise & power windows) for well under $300 a month, even with no trade.
When we were through, the salesman did say, “You know you’re getting this truck at invoice, don’t you?” I said, “Well, I’m happy if you’re happy” Like GraphiteR/T said, though, even at invoice, they make money, because they get the dealer kickback plus another fee for advertising…called “holdback”…plus any other dealer incentives that are offered. They’re not losing any money, or you wouldn’t walk out with the vehicle, even if they whine and let you buy it at “invoice”…

Message: I got my '02 Dakota this last Sat. This is the first time I have ever bought a new vehicle and am very inexperienced with "haggling", so I don't know how well I did. Maybe you guys could rate this deal or something. :-)
I got a 4x2 Quad Cab SLT Plus with a few additional things thrown in for a total sticker price of $25,085. I could have had it for $19,990, but I couldn't talk them down on the interest rate. I ended up with $22,500 and 0% over 60 months - which was cheaper in the end (I had a loan calculator on my Palm to add up numbers while the salesman talked).

Message: Do not forget about that 'Farmers club' thing that you can join for $50 then get a GAUARENTEED $500 off of the purchase price before taxes. This is good for ANY Dodge truck.
This is in ADDITION to any other 'rebates' and stuff.
I do not recall the exact name of this 'Farmers club' thing but anyone that is SURE they are going to purchase a Dodge truck should "join" for $50. It is well worth the savings.
BTW I did not "haggle" either... After researching for several months, I KNEW what I wanted and went into the dealer with a order-sheet and told them what I would pay for it. Less than a month later, my Dakota arrived from the factory. The window sticker says "This truck built for Bruce Peebles" ... Pretty cool!
When you order from the factory, the dealer only has to place the order and call you when it arrives. Since he does not have to worry about selling it (it is allready sold) you can get a better price. (And get EXACTLY what your want down to the axle-ratios!)

Talked them down $1100, yes this was a dealer. I was told it was the end of the month and they had to move x amount of cars by the first of the next month.
We had done all the paper work for the full price of $6000 and I said I would be back later to finalize the deal.
Show up 2 hours later and say the most I can afford is $4900. Needless to say they were not very pleased but took my offer.

I'm stepping into a whole world right now, buying a vehicle MYSELF for the first time. Message: When i went in and finally decided on on Dakota i wanted, the sticker price was 29,500. I went inside and they tried to set me up with a 70 month ball of crap deal. I wouldnt have any of it. I got kinda pissed at the dealer for making assupmtions because of my age. I am only 20, and they thought i wouldnt be able to support payments, or have a good enough credit line for the purchase. That's when i left the dealership, and hit the net. I went to vehix.com, and ran a dealer lookup on the dak i wanted. The next day, i got a call from the internet guy at the same dealership i was dealign with. He straight up offered me 500 over invoice, which would be something like 27600. i was interested then. So, i came back and had them set it up for this new deal. After they ran my credit, they changed a bit. As it turns out, i was able to take care of the purchase by myself, without a co-sign. So, after about 3 days of thinking about it, i went ahead and made the purchase. It was great, everyone there was very friendly, and best of all, i had my Dak. BUT, it seems things were going too good. About 4 days after the sale, i got a call from their financial department. They said chrystler woiuldnt approve the deal. I was pissed. I was soooo mad at this. It seemed liek i was going to have to give the dak of my dreams up. Time went on, and they put off the return for about 4 days (so they could get me by down payment back.) As it turns out, this was a blessing in disguise. The same day i was going to have to return the truck, dodge cam out with 36, 48 and even 60 months at 0.0%. I was sooo stoaked at this. I called the dealer up, and told him to get it approved for the 60 @ 0.0%. At first, they still said no, but then i guess they had their top executive go to chrystler and get it approved. So, all in all, i got a hell of a deal. It was 30,000 with taxes and crap, minus the 4500 i put down, so 25,500 divided by 60, 416.00 a month, no interest. Check out my dak at: http://www.lodiboi.com/dakota
It's got everything, minus the leather, which i didnt want.

Message: My '02 SLT QC, 4.7L stickered around $27,600. This was WAY more truck than I was looking for and told them that, several times. Every time I told them, that the price came down some more.
I eventually agreed to buy their truck for $22,200, before the trade-in, for which they ended up giving me $1000 (a stripped and ragged '94 Ranger with 98K, 4cyl, manual, AC, with no brakes). The trade was in the books as 4k msrp, 3k trade and 2k wholesale, if it was in good condition, and this truck wasn't in anywhere near 'good' condition.
Went in looking for a QC around 22k, nothing fancy. All this dealer had was QC's in SLT trim with 4.7L so that's where we started.
All-in-all, it took longer to clean up the truck and do the salesman demo than it did to negotiate the price. This was the last lot I hit that day, I arrived around 6:30pm which may have expedited matters.

Now, if I could only get as good a deal on a RT/Quad Cab preferably 4x4 at that.
