OK I am so depressed, just a few days ago I posted a question about my anti-loc brake light comming on and now look what happend!

http://members.dancris.com/~azdiver/mydakota.htm

Just last nite I was involved in a 5-10 mph collision with a chevy truck, and my new 2002 Dakota Quad lost............. :(

any reports on brake problems let me know, as I think my the brake system (with my foot on the brakes hard) failed to stop my truck.

Sorry to hear the badd news.....that sux

Any way I also own a 2002 CC V6 3.9L and I do notice that it takes quite a BIT of presure to stop on a dime. I've gotten in a few pickles where I though I wouldn't stop but luckly it did.

You may want to try this.....don;t burn me for it though. Did u have the Anit-lock break checked out b4? If you did try to blam the dealer for it. IF they said " Nothing was wrong with it " blame it on them and get them to fix it.

What was damaged? anything serious?...u maybe able to find parts cheap on ebay or dodgeparts.com {I think}

Sorry for the Badd news

Thats at 5-10 mph?!?!?!? That is a lot of damage for such a slow impact. I have heard over and over how tough these trucks are (xplit or whoever) claims to have taken a 8" tree down with little to no damage. Whats up with this? I cannot imagine a 25 mph impact.

I was thinking the same thing. That is alot of damage for an accident that happened at 10 miles an hour.

Kinda makes me wonder....at what speed do the air bags deploy at when in an accident?

I got into an accident awhile ago with my 2000 CC. A 2dr Grand Am pulled out infront of me and i nailed him. with the speed i was goin and the speed he was going it was a 15 mph crash. I did not have that much damage. it pushed in my bumper a little on the driverside, bent my hood, and that was it. well plus the hole in the bumper from where his ball was at. And the damage done to his car was alot worse. his whole trunk was bashed in up to the back seat. And looking at those pics i dont think that was at 5-10 mph.

To answer a few questions, yes it was a 5-10 mph collision I was stopped behind a car and a truck,
The light turned green and we proceeded thru the intersection, the first car hit his brakes 5ft after the intersection to turn right into a drive,
The second truck hit his brakes, and I just one car length behind the truck hit my brakes but the truck my didn’t respond quickly. The police officer wrote on my citation that my speed was 5 mph due to the fact that the light turned green and not much time or distance to get above 10 mph, and that was my estimation. My air bags did not deploy, as they are set above 20 mph.
When I first got my truck in April I noticed the brakes were a little sluggish and every once and a while my anti-lock brake light would come on
So the first time I brought the truck in for service I reported the problems as well as the front end a little out of alignment. As typical
with Dodge service they could not find any problem
with the brakes, as for the anti-loc light no codes were left on the computer so they just replaced a sensor and as far as the alignment the tech could not repeat the pulling to the right. When I got the truck back and left the dealer, I was able to get the truck to pull, so I brought the truck back a week later and have the service manager go for a ride with me and I showed him that the truck pulled to the right, and he confirmed it. As for the anti-loc light problem it still came on one and a while. Just recently It has been occurring more frequently so I started documenting it on paper ever time it happened 3 times on the July 15th 2 times on the 17th, 18th, 4 times on the 20th, 3 times on the 22nd 1 time on the 23rd and one more time on the 24th. And finally a collision that day, see a pattern?

As far as the damage I was shocked. After reading a lot of the posts it seams that the brake system is poorly engineered.

I had 93 dak sport that this new dak replaced and that had rear anti-loc brakes and never had a problem with.

The new 2002 with its pulsating brake petal and annoying loud clicking from the anti-loc brake relay when you make a stop is frustrating.

So here I sit trying to figure out who to take the truck to to give a non biased inspection of the brake system and do I retain a lawyer to represent me or do I trust mother mopar?

I still love the truck, its looks and the ride, all I want is it repaired..........

WOW - sorry to hear that. My truck stops just fine (2002 SXT CC 3.9 V6 5-spd) and this is with the so called crappy stock brakes. I had to stop quick one time from about 30 mph and there was not much pedal effort on my part at all and the calipers/pads grabbed nicely and I came to a very smooth stop with no rear lockup. At 5 mph you should have been able to stop that thing no problem, and literally stop on a dime. Must be something wrong with your system if at only 5mph it required THAT much pedal effort.

Heh, I wish it was no damage, my SLT's bumper took a decent sized dent, not really a bend, but more like those bubble-things you push in on the lids of sodas at Taco Bell. I have the SLT package however, the one with the chrome bumper and I'd have to say it holds up a lot better than the sports or R/T ones. I also got a small dent in my quarter panel right above the passenget headlight. Easy fix, under my deductible actually. My headlight got scraped a bit, but only the lower left mounting to the body was broken and the light needed to be replaced. Although it wasn't busted, the light didn't work.

My fog light poped out, but then I just put it right back in.

The quarter panel and passenger door had to be refinished because of some scraped and scratches. Although they might be able to take some good beatings, the paint is like watercolours.

Mostly cosmetic damage to me, nothing really big. That's odd that it did all that from that speed, wow!

On my '97 sport I have a metal bumper in front, seems very heavy duty. Did your truck have a plastic bumper azdakquad? If so that may explain so much damage.

Do the newer Dakotas retain the heay metal bumper used on the '97 Sports?

Well I the way it looks the bumper area is not real strong and maybe the way my truck hit the truck infont of me and the type of bumper he had effected the way my truck absorbed the impact. The area that is pushed in the most has an imprint of his reciever hitch, his truck was lifted abit and he had a big chrome bumper

It would seem that the bumpers are different on the newer models. I cannot see how any 5-10 mph impact would do anything but dent the bumper on my '97 sport, it is very heavy gauge metal.
Any input?

azdakquad, definitely retain a lawyer because I think you could get Chrysler to pay for the damage PLUS your insurance premium increases PLUS a little extra. Of course I'm not a lawyer so I don't know for sure, but I'd sure try to after seeing that!

it is definitely a GOOD thing you documented the ABS light coming on and when it did... while it might or might not be admissable in court, it definitely helps your case.

The problem has not gone away, but has gotten a little less severe.

That looks like a lot of damage for 10 MPH.

I am looking into that, and as a matter of fact the documentation on the light would be admissible
as when the officer wrote the ticket, I showed him my log book and he told me to oppose the ticket in court and he also signed the bottom of that paper to show that saw the problems on paper

Sorry to hear about your truck azdakquad. As a member of the "autobody" business , I can guess you are correct about how fast (or slow really) you were going. If you look at where your truck got hit , you can see it was right in the middle of the nose. There is no protection there. The frame is on either side of the impact. You guys also have to realize that he hit the reciever hitch of another truck. That`s probably the strongest part of most trucks, it doesn`t "give" at all. If the impact had been sheetmetal -to- sheetmetal , the outcome would have been alot different!

I wouldn`t waste my time trying to go after Dodge, they have a lot more money and lawyers than us regular folks. Just be happy nobody was injured and let your insurance do what you pay them to do....take care of you and your truck when you have an accident.

There are some crazy things that might have nothing to do with your brakes that could cause your abs light to come on. I`d get it fixed(the accident damage) and take it to a different dealer and see what they say. Good luck.

I've got a friend with a 97 sport and another with a 02 sport and he said his upper bumper section was plastic. I think DC did this as a response to the problems many people were having with the black sport bumpers rusting and pealing paint in no time.

Scott,
You are correct. That is the weakest spot and not much protection. Dodge and other manufactures design the vehicle with crumple zones to absorb impact and protect the occupants of a vehicle so if both vehicles hit they have a better chance of walking away from a collision. I unfortunately hit a solid object so I absorbed impact for both vehicles.

Some Dakotas have what is called a bumper cover, and it is not meant to be a bumper. The actual bumper is behind the , in this and most cases, plastic cover. There are no veh. that only have a plastic bumper. They all are required to have one of two things behind the cosmetic cover.
A solid steel or alum. bumper or what is called a reinforcement. They are basically the same thing.

They are what is going to absorb the impact , but even they can only do so much.

I had a friend of mine bring in his 96 RAM a few months ago , seems had hit a light pole in the middle of the parking lot where he works.
He was looking for a place to park , and had just let his foot off the brake when suddenly..POW he hits the pole. No big deal he figures , it probably just dented my bumper , he thinks.
To his surprize he happened to hit the pole just to one side of the frame end , and it crushed his grille, rad. support, fender, hood, and the hood pushed back into both doors! It was almost 6grand in damage! This is suppose to be a big tuff full size truck. Yea right.

There is NO WAY he was going and more than 5mph. But again , he hit something that didn`t give , and his truck absorbed the entire impact in one small , vulnerable area.

Just a thought, it might be a coincidence and might be totally unrelated, but due to the fact my brakes have been feeling strange and the light comming on to indicate a potental brake problem?
We will find out when a independant expert checks it out. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.

i hit a lincoln towncar the other day at about 5 mph, nothing was dented nor scratched thank god. The bumper on the towncare is low, so it hit my bumper directly.

Anyways, go after Dodge!!! I sure as heck feel its their fault, maybe they will change the braking system on our daks. Somebody said they have more money than any individual. That is a good reason to do it, because they will gladly pay money to settle outside of court, rather than recieve any negative publicity. There repuatation is worth quite a bit more than the cost of your accident :)

The dak has a very weak front bumper.. I hit a steel pole in a parking lot w/ mine and it tore it up pretty good.. Looking from the pictures it looks as if you hit a reciver hitch w/ a ball on it. And in the spot you hit your bumper is right in the weak spot between the frame. If you would have hit a bumper it would not have damaged it.. i hit a ford taurus square in the a$$ @ 10mph. It had one of those 30mph bumpers and it did no damage at all to either vehichal. The rear bumpers are crap too.. did this with a 3/4" rope.. http://glen.dodgedakotas.com/hop/bentbumper.jpg

I would blame the ABS if you skidded into the guy when it should have activated and kept the tires from locking.
This does not sound like the case though. I'm going to guess that a) you didn't react fast enough, b) was following too close, c)brake compound sucks.

Then again there could be some rare line clog where you couldn't get enough pressure in the line? Its worth checking out if your honestly telling yourself its the trucks fault for running into someone.

What he's saying is that his truck was showing a light which indicated that something was wrong. The dealer refused to look too far into it and in a situation where a truck or any vehicle should be able to stop on a dime it didn't. Tell me how ABS would get much of a chance at 5-10 mph. And it's pretty stupid to wait at an intersection for you to get your "2 second" interval. Did you read the post? He was coming off a light. I don't know how many times I've gone through and intersection and seen somebody dive off at the last second with little warning. He just got caught in a bad situation where the person turning probably didn't get the chance to signal properly in fear that they would think that they were turning at the intersection not after it.
Sorry but someone always believes that things like this are cut and dry but it's never true.

You are correct, I have had problems and I would take blame if A) I was following to closely, B) didn’t react fast enough but I have found that the brake just don’t work as well as my 93 dakota sport. I know the rules of the road, I volunteer with sheriff's department so I am aware of traffic safety. That is why I bring this topic to the forum, to help find clues, get feedback and look past what appears.
I don’t mind constructive input and all suggestions are welcome, Joel just wants to make sure all options are looked at.
