Is synthetic diff fluid worth it? What are the benefits? Im running Valvoline Durablend 75-90. What weight should I run? Im using a pre made gasket from Napa, do I have to make my own with silicone? The one I am using now doesnt leak, but its only 6 months old.

I used Castrol 80W90 last week and instead of unbolting to drain, I just siphoned the oil out. To refill the 8.5" rear it takes 2.25 quarts.

Hey Mark, is that Castrol Synthetic? What kind of gasket do you have on your rear diff?

80W90 is the correct weight, I used Slick 50 (very good price, bought it a long time ago but never used it until last summer) and blue silicone. If you let it set up right, it will be better than the felt gasket. Get one (silicone) that can be used with oils though.

just wondering, do you still need to use the mopar friction reducer on the limited slip diff with synthetic fluid?

Its not synthetic to the best of my knowlege. I didnt use a gasket because I didnt open up the housing. I simply put a hose in the refill hole and pumped the old oil out.

How long should I let the black RTV silicone set up before I put the cover back on? Do I tighten the cover bolts as tight as I can get it or what?

I see your supposed to use 80W90 gear oil but I am running Valvoline Durablend 75W90 now. Am I hurting anything?

I just changed my gears. My book calls for 75W90 but, for all practical purposes, 80W90 is the same thing. I used Valvoline synthetic oil with the Mopar friction modifier. Vavoline says it is for use in limited slip differentils but I put in the additive just for insurance. I used a tube of RTV that Mopar sells to make the gasket. It was $9 but the counter man says that is what they use and the local Ford and Chevy dealers buy it from them for their repair jobs too.

Thanks. I went to Pep-Boys today and looked at their lubricant shelf. That was the first time I have seen Valvoline full synthetic gear lube, but then again I dont get out much. Thay want $10.00 for a bottle, but I can get Amsoil for cheaper or even the bottle of Mobil gear lube sitting next to it. The guy I work with told me not to waste my money on a synthetic gear lube because I isnt any better than conventional. What do you guys think, is it worth it?

People run conventional oil in rear ends for many miles and never change it. I have taken some of these apart and the oil looked ugly BUT the gears were still good and working just fine. I use synthetic because I like it. I use it in my '99 Trans Am, Dakota, & lower unit in my Mercury outboard. If you are on a budjet, use conventional. Don't to forget to put the additive in if you have a limited slip differential.
As far as h.p. goes, you will never know the difference if there is any. Not much to be gained here.

With synthetic gear lube you will notice the difference in cold weather it does not get thick like molases when not being used, your departures are much smoother,in the transmission it also shifts much better
