Subject: 180 Degree Thermostat IP: Logged
Message: I live in Houston & it's the hot part of the year here. My 99 Dakota runs around 210 degrees right now while I'm on the highway runnin at highway speeds. Is this the normal operating temperature for my truck. I gather it has a 195 degree thermostat in it now. Was wondering is it going to screw up the computer or make my gas milage any worse if I go to a 180 degree thermostat.

Message: Been lucky here in Central Florida, mine has the stock 195 in it and I run the air NONSTOP due to our heat. I haven't seen it move abuve the 195 mark... yet. Getting ready to switch over to a 180 just as soon as I find out where the darn thing is located on my '00 4.7L cuz it sure isn't on top of the motor. Looked this morning at the bottom hose and it looks as if there is a thermo housing down there. Now if I could just find the cap & rotor.

Message: At the risk of hijacking 2BluefrUDakot's thread, I'll ask this...
Has anyone tried out Redline's Water Wetter?
I don't doubt that their claims of lowering water temp 20-30 degrees are bogus, but hell, even a couple of degrees can make a humongous difference one engine life.
The car & truck shows seem to put in their plugs for the product pretty regularly, but one never knows how much of that is paid advertising and how much is tried-and-true backing.

Won't mess with your computer or hurt your mileage. Might actually help your milage some. Mine runs a lot cooler with the 180.

Message: Sorry, 2BluefrUDakot. I had totally intended on answering your question in that post, but, I got sidetracked at work before I finished writing it. And by the time I got back to finishing it, I'd obviously completely forgotten what I was doing.
I can second what 4wDakota said. I've went over to a 180 degree thermostat with no problems. It helped out my temps while driving...except in stop-and-go traffic. I still run a solid 210'ish in those conditions. There was no harm/change in my mileage or computer.

Message: Thanks for the info guys. I went to a parts store yrsterday to get one & the parts guy said it may affect the computer. That's why I didn;t get one then. But being as alot of you have already switch to a 180, I'm going to go get one. But I may wait a few days before I do it ,just got my truck out of the shop on Tuesday after a bad experince with bad gas. Cost Diamond Shamrock $1600.00 to fix my truck. The Dodge Autoshop dump the tank & flushed the fuel system & replace the fuel pump. So think i'm going to burn a few tanks of gas before I switch the thermostat to see what kind of milage I'm gettin now.

Message: Don't know about the 3.7, sorry.
For the 4.7, it's the same as the 5.2/5.9 T-stat
