Subject: LED Tail Light fix yet?
IP: Logged

Message:
I was just wondering if the whole LED tail light fix came to ahead yet and what it might be. I have a 2002 SXT reg caba nd it already has the electronic flasher in it and that is the problem. It is a new flasher assembly where both the blinker and the 4-way flashers are built into one unit. They don't sell these in stores. The problem is that it needs either a new flasher, or a current load. What are the results that you guys have found?

Thanks,
Shawn

Try putting a resistor in paralell, I don't know the wattage of the lightbulbs offhand but I can give you the equation for figuring out the size of resistor you need.

(Wattage of Lightbulb - Wattage of LED) divided by 12V is the amount of current that needs to be drawn, divide 12V by the amount of current and that is the required resistance. Just make sure the resistor can handle the power it needs to dissipate.

where would the resister go?
Would I just splice it into the wire that leads to the socket that the bulb plugs into?

so lets just say the OE bulb is 35W and the LED is 5W. Using your math, would I then get a 2.5 ohm resister?
35W - 5W = 30W / 12 = 2.5

That's 2.5A, you only found the current. 12/2.5=4.8

You'll need a 4.8 ohm, 30W resistor (4.7 is the closest standard value).

Another, simpler option may be to wire a light somewhere else in paralell since the difference between 35 and 40W isn't that much.

oh I don't know the wattage, I was just using that 35W as an example
but thanks for the tips

A simpler shortcut method would be to divide 144 by the difference in wattage (in this case, 144/30)
