I have a '97 3.9 V6 Auto Club cab 4x4 dakota with 117k on it. The motor is still running strong, but the trans does things that scare me (not shifting into overdrive when its cold, weird shifting etc.) I'm tempted to just rip the anemic motor and tranny out and swap it for it's V8 counterparts. I have easy access to salvage vehicles so does anybody know if the drivetrain from a V8 2wd would work in my 4x4 or if different years or body styles (reg cab, club cab) complicate things. How about the last generation dakota? They are much cheaper to purchase. Has anyone out there performed the swap? Also, is a 4.7L any more difficult to swap?
