Message: Lets see what they actually say about reliability history. For the '01 model year all catagories are either above avg. or excellent. For '00 models it says the same with the exception of an avg. rating for transmission and brakes. Well somebody has to be average but overall it says the Dakota is well above avg for '00. Go back to '99 and brakes fall to below avg. but every other catagory is avg. or better. In some cases it is much better than avg. As you go farther back you see more catagories falling to avg and below but the trend seems to say reliability is improving. Yet dispite all that they show predicted reliability as much worse than avg. What gives?
On other fronts acceleration is much better than avg...yee hah. Gov't crash tests all above or much above avg. Lotsa red dots...above avg. ratings all over the page. I say live some and get the Dakota. You could do worse. Lotsa trucks must be below avg. in those few catagories that Dakota scores merely avg. and lookit all the above and excellent ratings. This truck is so good at so many things..Enjoy

Message: I figure I'll pipe in here.
I have a '01 QC 4x4 with 4.7L Just got it a few weeks ago, and love the truck. It had 19000 mi. on it. I have noticed the "usual" problems rotors, balljoints. I actually just took it in for suspected ball joint problems, and turns out to be a control arm bushing. We'll see on Wed. if that fixes it.
Anyways what I liked was the safety ratings, power for a "small" truck, visibility, and room.
Price wasn't too bad either, cosidering what other trucks we were looking at.
I had a '92 toyota for about 7 years previous. I ran that thing into the ground, the only serious problem I had was the v6 head gaskets. After the head gaskets were replaced, things slowly went wrong, ie. water pumps, timing belt, valves. I sold it with 210,000 mi. and still going.
But looking at everything, the parts were way more expensive, toyotas are high priced, and getting ugly.
Considering the few problems Dakotas have, that are easily replaced with aftermarket parts, I wouldn't pick anything else.(I didn't, after truck shopping for 3 months)

Message: I was confused by the Consumer Report rankings too. On one page they seem to rate the Dakota as Very Good in all sorts catagories, but then give it a Poor overall rating. Their explanation of how they do the ratings didn't make much sense either. Hmmm, maybe someone should rate their rating system!

Message: I've found Consumer Reports to be rather inaccurate. They compared a V6 Camero to a V8 Firebird (head to head test) and "interesting" things showed up, like signifigant differences in build quality.

Message: My 2 Cents, the 1998 Dodge Dakota was rated excellent in 98. One of the reasons I boght the truck; however, The dodge dakota is probably the worst truck I've owned. Needed wheel alignment right off the delivery truck, The seat belt went at 4 miles, Computer control mod twice by 10K (plus a re-program to stop a backfire problem). The trasfercase failed at 14K, the ball joints by 20K, tie-rods by 30K, Transmission leak by 30K, Rear End leak by 32K, Transfer Case failed second time by 45K Then rear end bearings again needed replacement by 52K. By 60K the clutch throw out bearing failed and required replacemet of the full clutch. Transer case leak again by 65K by 70K the rear pinion seal, 72K the transmision to driveshaft seal and finally just this week at 90K the passanger auto locking hub failed and throw out bearing agian...
I can't get rid of this thing either because the trade in value has dropped to about 9K where if I got a toyota it would still be 12 grand. Therefore, my conclution is that Consumer Reports has no clue.
