Subject: If anyone can identify this noise.... IP: Logged
Message: They will win my respect and also a prize. It'll be a great prize. Something cool.
The noise sounds like it's coming from my tranmission (1995 4x4 club cab 5-speed v-8) but only in gears 1,2,3, and 5. Not fourth. Sounds kind of like a ticking noise that increases with engine rpm's while it's in gear. Doesn't do it while it's coasting off the gas or in neutral. If you maintain a speed say in third gear, it's pretty loud.
Could it be the transfer case? Why doens't it do it in fourth?
History on the truck - transfer case was rebuilt except the chain. Chain was 500 bucks. It didn't make any noise before recently unless in 4 wheel drive... could it just be making noise all the time now (even though this noise is different than the loud chain)? Is the speedometer driven through the transfer case... sounds kind of like a noisy cable possibly... is that even possible.
I had a local mechanic check it out, but he couldn't really pinpoint it. He did change the tranny fluid and it does shift nicer now, but the noise is still there. Also replaced the blocked catalytic converter.. so my truck has lots more power, and shifts nice but this noise is annoying and I'm worried it's indicative of a greater problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Message: You might check the drive shaft. My brother's '02 4X4 made a clicking sound only in Reverse. He took it back to Chrysler and they changed the drive shaft out. The clicking is gone. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but it worked.

Message: Do you have any buddy's in the automotive industry? A friend of mine works for a drive shaft place and as a joke to fellow co-workers they put a zip-tie around the drive shaft at slower speeds you here a clicking noise but at high speeds it just wraps around the shaft. So it might be a bag or something, or someone is playing a joke on you.
Originally when I read the name of this post I was thinking back to when a gf of mine called me from the road and said "My car is making a funny noise can you tell me what it is?" So I asked her what it sounded like, so she put the phone out the window going 100km/h. All I heard was WOOOOOOOOOOOSH... stupid woman.

Message: pinched speedo cable, sounds like shift likage is puting a pinch or tight radius bend on speedo cable on 1-5 w/e of 4th, you may have a broken cable clip. you should get under it and locate the cable and have someone shift 1,2 and 3 with the trk. turned off while you observe or even have yur hand on it so you can feel if something is hitting it while they shift. could also be clutch linkage.hope this helps.

Message: Sounds like you have a chiped countershaft gear in tranny. The reason it doesnt make any noise in 4th is because there is no load on countershaft in 4th gear. In 4th your mainshaft is locked into direct drive. Drain oil & check for chips or filings

Message: Darn it, Ironhead seems to make sense.
The tranmission was recently drained, but I'll probably do it again soon and check.

Message: I have a 99' 2WD that has the same noise. I can only really hear it when I pass through a tunnel or beside a parked car with my windows down. Maybe it reflects the sound towards me?

Message: I had the same problem with a S10 blazer that I used to own. I took the tranny apart and found a very small chip in the countershaft bearing area. New countershaft was $300.00, I was broke-put the tranny back together and drove it another 20,000 mi. Current owner has 150,000 mi. on it and never did anything with it. Just a thought.

Message: Well, I don't know if I'm going to try to have it fixed or not. I don't have money burning a hole in my pocket and I don't have the tools or the know-how to take the tranny apart myself. I think I'll try putting some synthetic lube in it and see if that quiets it down at all. Then drive it till it breaks.
But thanks for all your replies!
