Subject: how to start 408 buildup
IP: Logged

Message:
I've decided to start building up a 408 and was wondering how i should start. should i buy a bare block and start from there, or should i get a complete 360 ?? almost all of the engine internals will be replaced with high performance parts. i know that the block itself would be cheaper, but i think i would be more comfortable rebuilding it if i had taken it apart in the first place.

i don't know, just wanted ya'll opinions. thanks for any info.

why not just buy a 408 long block from krc? its already done. i beleve that would be the cheapest way, and the easiest way.

cause i don't have the money for it all at once. it's going to be a long term project over a year or so. plus, i want to build it myself. just throwing a complete bought engine in won't mean as much to me.

you could save your money and let it collect intrest THEN buy the longblock, same amount of time and less cost.

but anyway, it would not make any sence to buy a complet 360, then buy parts that you already have for the 408 (rods, crank, pistons, heads, ect.) it would also take more time to tear it down.
just find a used block, send it out to a machine shop to have it magnafluxed, and board .030 over, then start buying (good) parts.

if you dont know how to assemble a engine, are you sure you are up for a job of this caliber? you had better start reading up on some shop manuals...lol

it's not that i don't know, it's just that in any situation--not just engines--i always feel better about putting something back together if i was the one who tore it apart in the first place.

again, i don't want to throw in a complete engine that i can just buy online. it's just that in the future, when i'm telling that ricer that i just blew away what i have under the hood, i can make sure to point out that i built the whole thing in my garage, and laugh at him when he starts bragging about his little bolt ons!!!

anyways, i'll be checking into local junk yards to find a block. the whole 360 just isn't practical.

sorry about the little rant, but I HATE RICERS!!
