Subject: 4.7 w/Skid Plates and Oil Change IP: Logged
Message: Need to change my oil soon.
Is it easier to take of the skid plates with a buddy and change the oil, or use a 2-3 liter soda bottle with the bottom cut off, where I imagine you stick the top part up in the hole?
What is the easiest, lazy, on your back in the driveway, type of way, to change my oil?
BTW, Kmart is my local store, their best and cheapest oil filter for my 2001 4.7 would be a PUR 1 filter?.
If so, what vendor # (trying to stay away from Fram filters)
FWIW, I'm using 5w-30 Royal Purple Syntheitc Motor Oil, truck turned 1 year old on May 2nd, only have about 8800 miles, this will be it's 3rd oil change.

Message: I just take off the skid plates by myself, really easy. I found this out the hard way, the first time I changed my oil the oil missed the cutout in the skid plate completely and filled up the skid plate with oil. Lots of fun let me tell ya! The soda bottle idea could work too I suppose.

Message: if the 2L works, go that route, but just letting it drain is a big mess. If the 2L doesn't work, defenetly remove it, or you'll have oil all over the driveway floor. must be nice to have those low miles
mine turned 8 months old and I will have 15,000 by tomorrow. I've already changed mine 6 times.

Message: I put a rag under the oil filter so that when i loosen the filter a little at a time the oil is soaked up by the rag. This seams to work the best for me. seems like to much work to take off the skid plate. But then again i never tried it

Message: Take off the skids plates. Very easy to do alone. Takes about 10 minutes. Much less time than cleaning oil out of them. I found out the hard way.

Message: I second the FumotoValve - attach a short hose to the valve and there's no mess. Use the cut off soda bottle trick or simply a plastic sandwich bag for the filter.

Message: Being currently unemployeed (summer off with pay...thank you WCOM!), I'll go the cheap route and probably remove the skid plate (but have my son help me get it back on).
Re: Kmart's selection of filters, probably should spend a little extra for a good synthetic oil filter they stock. Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

Message: All this work for nothing!! Just get a small funnel with a long spout(make sure this end sticks through the skid plate opening) and hold it close to the pan hole as you unscrew the plug and out comes the oil. So simple.
Tip- dont let the plug fall into the funnel otherwise the funnel will overflow.

Message: I`ve been checking into that this week! No one can tell me if one of the kits will fit the 4.7 engine. The Fram book doesn`t list any 4.7s , not even in the Jeep section. I have e-mailed Fram , but have yet to get a response.
The guy at the local Discount Auto sold me the one that is listed for every Dodge engine (4-6-8)
sold scence , like 1962 ?! He thinks it`s going to be the same , but told me if it doesn`t work , just bring it back. I`m figuring if I have to go back , I`ll take the wifes car, and my drain plug and try to match it up.

Message: I`m talking about the new system they make, not the oil or filter. It replaces your drain plug with a new piece, that allows you to just twist on the supplied coupler and hose to easily drain your oil.
Or so they say.It looks like it should work.

Message: There are several different SD-2s? I didn't know that. I must have got lucky when I bought mine. I''ve only seen the SD-1, SD-2, SD-3, etc. I think I still have the packaging at home. I think it said 14mm, but I'll check when I get home.
