Subject: Extang Tuff Tonno III and 303AP IP: Logged
Message: I just installed an Extang Tuff Tonno III and was curious about Extang's warranty clause where they say that use of any other protectant will void the warranty. I've seen many car enthusiast sites that prefer 303 Product's 'Aerospace Protectant' on all vinyl and rubber. Looking at 303's website their stuff seems to be the best available and at $10 a 16 oz. bottle (same price as 8 oz. of Extang's TonnoTonic) is not cost prohibitive. Any one else have ideas on using this on Extang's? and why Extang has that bogus clause in their warranty?

Message: I swear by 303 and buy it by the gallon jug for around $50 from their website which lasts me a whole summer on my Downey SST tonneau, Tires/Rims(Yes rims as it doesnt streak and repels brake dust) and all other plastic parts on my Dak like mirrors, door handles, bumper caps, interior, etc. Repels dust and does not contain Silicone which gives a shine but breaks down and destroys what it was made for, Vinyl and rubber.
After two good heavy coats I can go about 2-3 weeks before needing to reapply and everything except for the hard plastic stays nice and dark looking.
I am not suprised that a warrany can be voided by using silicone based products since it reduces the life of vinyl considerably(Armor-All, ugghhh). 303 is the only product I know of its kind which why they probably recommend using it to not void the manufacturer warranty. How would they know if you used something else, cuz if the edges of your tonneau are curled up, dried out and cracked it is a sure sign of silicone abuse:)
I may sound like a 303 fanatic but, well... I guess I am since I am so pleased with the results it has given me over the past year I have been using it. My tonneau still looks like new after a year and 3 months and my tires do too without the common cracks between the tread bars. I always thought the tire tread cracks were normal and couldn't be prevented, 303 takes care of that.
Buy some and try it for about six months IMO, I have about 20 half-used bottles of every other brand of tire shine, dash shine, bumper shine that I have tried and will sell all for $10 + shipping:)

Message: I received the following email from the folks at 303 products. Based on this I'm sold. I picked up a bottle of the Aerospace Protectant at a local Overtons and am pleased with the results.
Right, without commenting on any brand names, these responses to your
questions...
1) Will the Aerospace Protectant cause any shrinkage of the Extang Vinyl
tonneau cover?
303 A. Protectant is safe and effective for all vinyls. Answer is no.
2) I have read information from various sources that Vinyl needs to
'breathe' meaning it must be semi-permeable and allow air to pass through
but not water. Does application of the Aerospace Protectant hinder or
otherwise impede this property? If this is not really an issue for Vinyl,
please feel free to enlighten me.
Vinyl is impermeable, water or air will not pass through. Breathability
refers to ability to dissipate heat. 303 A. Protectant does not interfere
with the ability of vinyl to dissipate heat it absorbs from the sun.
Swabbing down a car bra with an automotive silicone oil type "protectant"
product does affect breathability, can actually cause condensation on the
bottom against the paint which can, remaining and "cooking" there,
negatively affect the finish.
3) Interpreting Extang's waranty to the letter, if I apply the Aerospace
Protectant to my cover, I will void the warranty. Can you state that your
product will not cause any harm or damage to this cover when properly
applied?
See our response to #1.
You'll find information on 303's website about this application very
pertinent, informative and, hopefully, interesting. On this first link,
please read Tech Facts Vol. II and Vol. IV.

Lastly, when you use 303 A. Protectant, be sure to follow directions for
best results: Spray on sufficiently to get the surface to be treated WET
with the product; then wipe the surface COMPLETELY dry with a soft
absorbent
non-abrasive cloth such as an old t-shirt. Turn over to a dry spot to
finish drying (you can't finish/dry it properly with an area of the cloth
which is damp with 303). Paying attention to this ensures that the treated
surface is super repellent to soiling, dust & other contaminants and it
makes the finish last longer.
Your concern is a good one and you asked your questions in such a way that
we can answer it specifically...thank you. Please advise if this office
can
assist further.

Message: I swear by 303 also and is the only thing I will use on my tonneau, tires, dash etc. It's nice to have one product do all of this instead of having 3 different products for the tires, rims, dash etc.
Bob, any news on the potential Syracuse Dakota meet?

Message: Ut-oh I've been using UV2 for a couple years now on my vinyl products and have not had any problems with it at all. I have recommended it to many other people and told them not to use Armor All. I just read the label and it says it contains two silicones! AAAGH, I find it hard to believe that it's harming my vinyl, but I don't doubt the reports about silicone either. Could it be the "types" of silicone in UV2 are not harmful?

Message: Glad, others know about or are finding out that 303 kicks ass. Remember it works great on the wheels too, when I spray down the tires with 303 and wipe them after a few minutes I use the same rag to wipe a coat of 303 on'em and brake dust hoses right off with ease.
I have to order up another gallon since we tried it on my buddies RED 10 meter Fountain powerboat and used the remaining 3/4 gallon, the statements that it brings back faded gelcoat without buffing are true! Although my arms are still killing me from the amount of deck on his boat, so it feels like a handbuffed it. Maybe next time I will use a thick pad on an orbital buffer, mmm.... I already notice the dark finish is lasting as good as the high speed polish/wax I did to it a couple months ago. Glad I don't own the boat, couldn't afford the 303 needed to keep it like new, lol.
Dan, I haven't heard anything further about a potential Dak meet in the Syracuse area. I am thinking that everyone who suggested it may just not have enough spare time to devote to the rather large undertaking, like me! I am keeping my eyes and ears peeled though cuz my Dak is ready for some showin.
PaulyD, I am not a silicone expert, but I think they are all oil based which breaks down rubber, vinyl, etc. My guess is it will eventually degrade whatever you are putting it on IMO.
